This week in class, we have a few things to focus on. The first is plot. Students will begin taking Cornell notes on plot on Monday and should finish on Tuesday.
We will also begin doing think alouds in class, as part of Reading Apprenticeship. By training ourselves to think aloud to a partner as we look at pictures, we are able to track our thoughts and begin metacognition. We will practice this skill throughout the course of the year, as a main part of our reading curriculum.
Lastly, we’ll begin reading Seedfolks, by Paul Fleischman. Students will read along each day as we listen to the Audible version, with many different readers. This book not only provides a great way to practice with plot, conflict, and other key terms in many different stories, but also has underlying themes of individuality, respect, and people from different walks of life coming together. It is an important lesson at the beginning of the year, especially for students coming from different schools, unifying at Stout.
