Hello Families!
We have been learning and experiencing so many great things in kindergarten! Its been a little while since I have shared some pictures on the blog….so please enjoy the adorable pictures that follow our information about our spelling test.
Each week we get a new list of spelling words that features some sight words as well as a word family. Each Friday your child will have a spelling test on these words that will be graded. We make these fun as learning should be! Please, help your child by practicing the words with them at home each night! There are many fun and creative ways to practice spelling words at home that go beyond the pencil and the paper. These ways also engage their creativity and fine motor skills! Here are some fun ideas!
- Make the words with play do or pipe cleaners.
- Write the word in shaving cream on a cookie sheet or table.
- Paint the words with water colors.
- Write each word in a different color with markers.
- Cut out letters from magazines to spell the words.
- Use magnetic letters to spell the words.
- Make a set of spelling words on index cards. Make a matching set. Then flip over the the cards to play a game of memory. As a pair is flipped over, your child needs to spell the word.
Here are the spelling words for Week 1
- like
- the
- we
- a word from the -at family. (This is a word I will chose to assess your child’s understanding of beginning sounds and word families.) ex. bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, sat, pat, that, rat.
- Their first name and last name. (Spelled with only one uppercase letter at the beginning of their first name and one uppercase letter at the beginning of their last name. The rest of the letters should be lowercase.

We are also beginning to learn about goods and services. If you have any cleaned empty containers, boxes, string, twist ties, buttons, or other items we could use to create our maker’s fair of goods on Friday, please send them to school with your child! The more items the better!!!
As we begin Unit 5 in Benchmark, we will be talking about the technology we use at home and at school. With this, we will also practice informational writing and research using the technology of the Internet. We will be researching and learning about the incredible penguin! If you would like to search online with your child to learn more about penguins this would be not only a great way to spend time together, but also a way to use technology at home.

As you can see, we are loving kindergarten and all of the ways we are learning! Thank you for all you do to help your child grow each day!
I am so excited to see more great things from them! I love my job and they are the biggest reason why!
Thank you for all you do!
Love, Ms. Mehrhof
