UFLI

This year, we are using a program called UFLI for phonics instruction. It was created at the University of Florida Literacy Institute. I have used variations of this program over the years and this is by far my favorite!

I attached a PDF below that explains what we do everyday in phonics. It also explains how you can support your child’s phonics instruction at home.

Every week, I will send home a half sheet that is 2 sided. On one side, there will be the lesson that we are working on during phonics on Monday/Tuesday (or the first and second day of the week) and the other side will be the lesson from Wednesday/Thursday (or the third and fourth day of the week). On Friday, we will work on reviewing those two lessons and assessing. Please use that half sheet to help guide what you work on at home. I will send this week’s sheet home tomorrow.

Some info to remember:

*We are working on 2 (two) new concepts a week. This will be found in the BOLD print under the New Concept and Sample Words section. Most of the time, the New Concept will be a sound (for example, last week worked on the /t/ sound) but sometimes it’s a Concept such as CVC (Consonant/Vowel/Consonant) words.

*We are also working on the PROPER formation of these letters. I will post some more on that later but it’s important that the kiddos are practicing the letters correctly so they are not learning bad habits.

*There will be letter tiles/word mats in your child’s reading bag for building words. Please keep track of them as they were time consuming to make and they WILL NOT be replaced.

*We are learning some Irregular Words (we call them heart words because we have to know them “by heart”) but we are not simply memorizing a list of words. We will decode (sound out) some of the word and other parts we may have to learn. These words will be on that half sheet.

*Reading/Phonics bags will be sent home soon! I’m still working on those work mats. 🙂

Our first half sheet was sent home today! It is in your child’s folder.

Have a great night!

Snack Sale!

Our snack sale will be on Thursday this week. If sending in money, please help me out by putting it in an envelope or a ziplock baggie and placing it in your child’s folder. It’s so much easier to check ONE place when getting ready for snack sale. Thank you!!

A note from Mr. A

Dear Snow Community,
Our PTA is diligently planning our 3rd Annual Trunk or Treat event this Friday, October 25th, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. If you would like to contribute by donating candy, please place your donations in the candy Monster collection bin located in the lobby.

Halloween

Hello Snow Families,

We will have our Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 31st, beginning at 2:30pm.

You may have your child wear a costume (this is optional). No masks, weapons, or heavy makeup will be allowed. If you would like to watch the parade, you may stand on the Houston side of the building (on the black top or field). Please do not block the path of the parade. We will not be passing out candy, since Trunk or Treat will be taking place prior to the parade.

A note from Mr. Abdelfattah

Dear Snow Community,
As we welcome the new season, we would like to kindly remind all our students and their families to dress appropriately for the colder weather. Please encourage your children to wear suitable clothing, such as jackets, coats, gloves, hats, and scarves, as temperatures begin to drop. Our priority is to ensure that all students remain warm and healthy as we approach winter. Thank you for helping us reinforce the importance of bundling up.

Book Fair

Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day to shop at the book fair!

If you would like to have your child shop, please send in the money in an envelope or a baggie and put it in their folder. I will check folders first thing in the morning and we will shop before lunch.

Thank you!
