Week Of December 2nd

Posted on

I had been wanting to post to this blog all weekend, but the server was down 🙁 I would first off, really like to thank our wonderful room moms for the amazing birthday surprise last Tuesday. You are so very generous and I am blessed! The kids loved the Thanksgiving/birthday celebration and I am again reminded of how very thankful I should be for being given this group of kids :):)

This week it’s back to business as usual! Your child is coming home with his/her Module 2 Math Test. Overall the kids did well, but many need practice with the multiplication facts. Please see the yellow note in their folders.

This Friday is our “in school” field trip. Your child will be getting a hands on presentation of what it would be like to be one of the 3 Fires Native Americans.

If possible, please send your child with boots or another pair of shoes to wear in school this week. It is very muddy on the playground and they will need shoes to change into for the classroom.

If your child would like to donate hair for Locks Of Love at the end of December, please email me. Permission slips will be going home this week (as soon as I get them from Ms. Schug)

Our Very Short Week Of November 25th

I wanted to remind you that the $5 for the “In School” field trip is due by Tuesday.

Also, as you may know, your child brought home the directions and template for his/her Michigan Brochure Project. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me. The project is not due until the Friday after Thanksgiving break. I will be sending home the Michigan Studies textbook over break. There is a link to the GEOGRAPHY of Michigan packet on this blog. Just look for the Social Studies Tab at the top of the page and it will take you to that packet. If you are curious as to what they are currently studying in Social Studies you can click on the HISTORY of Michigan tab.

Our Module 2 Math Assessment is Tomorrow. Reviews went home with your child on Friday.

We had 8 great candidates for Student Council Senator. All of them did a wonderful job with their posters and their speeches! Unfortunately, we could only have one winner, but they were ALL winners. We are very proud to have Layla Hamade as our Senator this year. I have no doubt that Layle will do a GREAT job representing our class.

Your child will be bringing home a note Monday giving you information on our upcoming “in school” field trip. We have a naturalist coming from Oakwoods Metropark to present a living history of Michigan’s Native Americans and the French Voyageurs. We had this program last year and it is truly awesome! The cost per child will be $5. Additional information will be in the note. 🙂

Mrs. Schug is looking for children who are interested in donating hair for our annual Locks Of Love (taking place at the school sing-a-long on December 20th. If your child is interested please email me or jot a note in the planner and I will make sure you receive a permission slip.

I will be sending home November book orders this week. Remember, you can order online at scholastic.com with the code HCCDM

Finally, picture retakes will take place this coming Friday.

As we begin this week, I would like to thank all the parents who came to conferences last Thursday evening. I am honored to be your child ‘s teacher and am blessed to have your support. I look forward to seeing the rest of you this Tuesday and Thursday. 🙂 Reminders were sent last week, but if you need another, just send me an email and I will let you know your time again.

Last week we had our PBIS Celebration in the gym to honor students who displayed excellent respect, responsibility and safety during the month of October. The following are the kids who ended each day in October on green: Zachary A. Husayn, Madleen, Sophia, Noor, Natalia, Layla, Houda, Joanne, Isabella, Zachary H. Hani, Danya, Mahdi, Maya, Hadi, Mila and Owen.

We also had 4 Student’s of The Month this month and they were: Maya, Mila, Owen and Hadi. Congratulations!!!

Your child is still welcome to bring a water bottle to school, however, due to the flip top nature of our desks, they must be stored over on the window sill as we have no other open flat surface to put them on. Now that the heat has been turned on in the building, out water bottles are right over the heat vents (not an ideal situation!) Therefore, I am asking that the kids leave the water bottles in an outside pocket of their backpack if they still; choose to bring them.

This coming Friday Spirit Wear orders will be due if you are interested. We are also still collecting dry and canned food items for the homeless and food pantries that support those less fortunate.

Finally,

As a mom of a Marine Corps veteran, I have to end this post with a shout out to all the veterans on Veterans Day! 🙂

I can’t believe it is November already! But seeing as it is now dark at 5:30 🙁 reality has set in!

It will be a busy first two weeks of November. We will have our first round of parent/teacher conferences this Thursday evening. Next week, we will again have conferences on Tuesday and Thursday evening. I sent home reminders last week. If you are still unsure of your conference time, please email me.

As we start the 2nd semester, your child will be learning the following:

Math: We will be taking the Mid-Module assessment for Module 2 tomorrow. Your child has a review in their take home folder. We will be starting Topic C on Tuesday. This topic covers rounding.

Writing: Your child is writing another opinion piece. This one is being done with less teacher support 🙂

Social Studies: We just started our unit on Michigan History. Your child will be learning all about the 3 Native American tribes that lived in Michigan before it became a state and the introduction of the French Fur Traders in Michigan.

Science: We are finishing up our study of Forces and will be starting our new unit on Weather and Climate.

Reading: All groups are continuing in their chapter book literacy groups reading fiction or historical fiction.

We are partnering with Hype Athletics to collect food for the homeless shelters and food pantries on our area. You can send non-perishable food in with you child any day in November. The collection boxes are outside Mrs. Minier’s room.

We continue to collect plastic lids/caps.

As the weather gets colder, please make sure your child is wearing a coat to school (gloves and hat are also preferred). If you drop your child off on the Lawrence side of the building in the morning, please make sure your child is in line when the bell rings at 8:35. We have a new security lock on the door and those doors will lock automatically after the last child enters the building. Any student who is dropped off late, needs to enter through the main (York Street) doors.

Finally, do not forget that Tuesday is Election Day and the kids do not have school on that day.

Have a wonderful week!

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Taleb, Mrs. Nasser, and Mrs. Hamka, for all the prep work that went into creating such a wonderful party for our class.
