Wednesday, November 6th!

Welcome back! Hope you had a good day off.

11/6 Quick Write:

I will not be in class tomorrow (except for 3rd period), but I will be in the building. Our substitute norms will apply, as always.

Any misbehavior will result in:

  • Call home
  • Signature on the PBIS form
  • Lunch detention (you will spend lunch with me)

Do not embarrass yourself, and DO NOT embarrass me. The substitute will be instructed to call/text me if there are ANY issues. Since I’m in the building, I will immediately stop by if necessary. Remember… I want the sub to see what I get to see everyday– how cool, smart and on-task you all are. Make me proud!

In class today we will be cruising through as many sources as we can. Below you will find helpful Vocab for Source 2, and guidelines for Source 3 and 4. Use your time wisely as we want to get done with the sources as soon as we can.

Have a lovely day!

Friday, NOVEMBER 1st!

First day of November!! Summer is definitely over :/

11/1 Quick Write: You are turning these in today… there need to be FIVE.

Please note: today is the last day of the Card Marking. While some of you may have felt stressed this week wrapping up various assignments, keep in mind we have a FRESH start next week! Reflect on how this quarter went, and adapt your behavior and habits accordingly.

Today we are finishing up annotating Source #1, and hopefully moving into Source #2. Since we have four sources to get through, we need to use our time wisely.

Attached below are slides for Source #2.

Have a great and SAFE weekend… don’t eat all of your candy all at once!

10/31 Quick Write:

Yesterday you received a Student Packet for Investigation #2 (see below).

Please be very careful with this Packet!! You need to bring it to class everyday, and when you turn it in at the end of the Investigation, it will be the first summative assignment of the new card marking!

Yesterday we went over some background information on Hammurabi, Mesopotamia, and Babylon. While we went over this info, you filled in the first page of your Packet. See the background slides below:

TODAY, we are introducing the Central Question for the Investigation, and touching base on our Investigation Task (the assignment we do after we have read and annotated all of the sources).

After familiarizing ourselves with our eventual summative assignment, we will begin to read Source #1, using the Bookmark tool as a guide (remember the Bookmark?!)

Find the slides for Source 1, and the Bookmark Tool below.

If we do not get through Source #1 today, we will pick up where we left off on Friday. Have a great day!

Tuesday, October 29th!

Hello there!

10/29 Quick Write:

Please note: if you earned less than a 3 on your Sumer Ad, you can come in at lunch today (Tuesday) and Wednesday to make corrections. Also, if you were unable to complete the CH. 1-5 Flowchart in class today, you can come in to finish that up too. These are both summative assignments so take advantage of this opportunity!

Today we are thinking about how rules and laws effect our daily life, and why they exist in the first place. In your table groups, y’all will be given a list of four common rules in either a classroom, a school, or at home. See the list of rules below.

You will discuss and collaborate with each other about the consequences and purpose of each rule. You will each write your conclusions on the handout below.

At the end of class, once you have discussed each rule with your group, we will share out and listen for any similarities between the rules.

Have a great Tuesday… enjoy the last few days of October!

MONDAY, October 28th!!

Welcome back! New seats 🙂

10/28 Quick Write:

Please take note of the following info:

Today we are wrapping up and connecting the last few chapters with a Flowchart. You may use all of your notes, Gallery Walks, handouts etc, but no chromebooks or textbooks. To complete the flowchart, use as many details as possible, and make sure to fill in all of the blanks!

This is another SUMMATIVE. This is the last big assignment of the card-marking.

This flowchart will show me you have a concise understanding of the progression of early humans throughout the Paleolithic Age, during the Neolithic Age, and then into the Age of Civilization (also known as the Bronze Age!)

Have an amazing Monday… Wake up and get to class on time!

Friday, October 25th…

We made it!!

10/25 Quick Write:

Today is an opportunity to show me what you know! You will complete this summative assignment in class. Your Sumer advertisement is an ad that tries to convince people to come visit or move to Ancient Sumer. To do this, you must explain four characteristics of civilization in a way that would persuade someone to go to Sume.

Once everyone is done, we’ll share out! You will informally present your ads, explaining to each other which characteristics you chose, and how you used each characteristic to convince someone to go to Sumer.

Have a lovely day and weekend!

Thursday, October 24th!

Happy Thursday!

10/24 Quick Write:

The first task we have today is to finish our bubble map. Remember, on the thinking map you must include the following:

  1. [in the round bubble] Write your own definition of each characteristic (after we compile a list of all of your ideas on the board).
  2. [in the cloud-bubble] Write or draw how each characteristic works or looks today.

When we are done with the Bubble Map, we will progress to the SUMMATIVE activity (remember… this is 90% of your grade). Instead of having you write an essay or CER, or take a test, you will create a traveling advertisement of Sumer.

In essence, you will show me what you have learned about the characteristics of civilizations by creating a page-sized ad trying to convince ancient people to move or visit Ancient Sumer. Use four of the seven characteristics of a civilization as persuasive reasons to go to Sumer. You will follow the instructions below.

Remember: since this is a summative grade, you need to demonstrate to me you have a proficient and clear understanding of how Sumer was a civilization (and what a civilization is in general).

We will continue this summative assignment tomorrow.

Wednesday, October 23rd:

Today is a good day for showing me what you have learned… and, consequently, helping your grade.

10/23 Quick Write:

The first task we have today is to discuss each characteristic of civilization, and fill in the bubble map. Throughout our discussion, and with the help of your graphic organizer, you will fill in a bubble thinking map. On the thinking map you will do the following:

  1. [in the round bubble] Write your own definition of each characteristic (after we compile a list of all of your ideas on the board).
  2. [in the cloud-bubble] Write or draw how each characteristic works today.

If time allows, we will progress to the SUMMATIVE activity (remember… this is 90% of your grade).

Halfway done! Go, team, go!
