Tonight’s homework is a worksheet where students have to draw the hands to represent time to the half hour. Additionally, they must circle words that have two syllables.
Halloween
Students are able to wear their Halloween costumes tomorrow as long as they pay two dollars. Please do not send any weapon accessories with your child. Thank You!
Monday Homework
We learned to tell time to the hour last week and today we learned how to tell time to the half hour. We say it is “half-past” the hour in addition to ___:30. Please continue to use your clocks at home for additional practice. They must also circle the words with two syllables.
Fall Celebration
We will have a fall celebration on Tuesday. Please do not send your child to school in a costume. They may bring a WRAPPED TREAT to share with all of the children, but please do not send baked goods. Children will take their treats home to enjoy 🙂 We have 22 children in our class.
Week of October 30-November 3
Happy Sunday, Families!
We had a lot of fun on Friday, picking a pumpkin and visiting animals at the petting farm. A huge thanks to Mr. Awada, Mrs. Abdulla and our wonderful PTA! That awesome event was our PBIS reward for positive behavior during the month of October. November’s reward will be a magic show and this will only be available to children who “Flip their card ” less than five times next month. Please review the school and classroom expectations with your child as I am hoping everyone gets to participate. Here are our plans for the week:
Spelling
Words
1. bath
2. both
3. with
4. other
5. mother
6. father
7. yes
8. no
9. as
10. has
Reading: We are continuing to read nonfiction texts and this week, we will look closer at text features such as:
1. bold words
2. subheadings/headings
3. Title pages
4. glossaries
5. captions
6. photos
7. indexes
8. labels
Please explore these features with your child and discuss ways to use them while reading a nonfiction text. These features are parts of a book that help readers find information.
Writing: We are working on opinion writing. We state our opinion in the first sentence, provide three reasons for having our opinion, and end with a sense of closure. This week, we are publishing our opinion writing about our favorite special class. We will also begin to write about our favorite pets and try to persuade our parents to buy us one :-).
Math: We are continuing to use different strategies to solve word problems (addition and subtraction) in math. We also begin to tell time to the hour and half hour this week. Students brought clocks home. Please talk about the minute and hour hand on the clock. Students should know that there are sixty seconds in one minute, sixty minutes in one hour, thirty minutes in a half hour, and twenty four hours in a day. We will use the language “half- past” ten o’clock instead of just ten-thirty. I will post the unit pre-test, as many parents found this helpful last week.
Social Studies: We are studying the terms past, present, and future. Students should be able to sort events from their lives into these three categories.
Science: We are continuing to study air and weather. They will impress you because they can identify cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds and tell you what each kind of cloud can tell you about the weather. Additionally, we will learn to look at weather tools such as wind vanes to gain information about the direction of the wind. Tuesday, we will do a special activity for Halloween science.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please know that I am available. Let’s continue to work together so that your child has a successful year in first grade!
Homework Thursday
We learned how to tell time to the hour today. Tonight’s homework asks students to record the time to the hour. They must also circle words that are nouns (people, places, or things).
We are learning to tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction (informational) books. Please have your child watch the video below.
Wednesday’s homework
Our unit 2 test will be tomorrow, so please make sure you look at and practice the pretest that I posted last week 🙂 Our homework tonight asks students to circle the two numbers in the rectangle with a particular sum. The sum is the answer to an addition problem. They must also circle words that rhyme with goat.
Tuesday’s Homework
Students have to solve story problems by illustrating and writing equations. They must circle the verbs as well.
Monday Homework
Monday’s homework will be a review for our math test this week. Please take time to go over each question with your child, as they are still having some challenges with selecting just one answer 🙂 We are working on making tens and finding sums. Also, please watch the video on the “th” digraph, as this is our spelling pattern this week.
