Reading: We are revisiting Narrative texts, which means we will read stories, describe the setting, characters, and major events. We will also learn to distinguish between important and unimportant events in the beginning, middle, and end of the story, which will help us retell the key details of a story.

Writing: We will write narratives from the point of view of a butterfly, which will help us explain the lifecycle of a butterfly and its stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly.

Social Studies: We are revisiting needs and wants this week. We will distinguish between things that we must have to survive such as food, water, clothes, air, and space and things that we want such as toys, video games, candy, etc.

Science: We are continuing to learn about sound and light. Last week, we learned that sound is caused by vibrations by plucking a rubber band and table fiddle. We hope to make a book fiddle this week. We love our new science books because we learned to use text features to find key details in texts and our science books are full of these features. We recorded key details about sound on a circle map.

Congratulations to our bucket-filler, Mohmamed Elkadri and our Student of the Month: Orion Simon!

Tuesday’s homework

We are continuing to learn how to measure. Lining The measuring tool up with the object end to end seems to be the most challenging part. They must complete the worksheet and match the vowels with the words that contain the vowel sound.

Week of November 27

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope you are enjoying this wonderful break and spending time with loved ones. Here are our plans for the week:

Spelling
Words
1. chill
2. chick
3. chop

Reading: We are continuing to use informational text features (bold words, table of contents, glossaries, indexes, headings, photos, labels, and captions) to locate information about a topic. Students should be able to gather facts (key details) about a topic by looking at the text features and using these features to find information in a text. We will continue to practice these skills.

Writing: We are finishing publishing our informational pieces about a season. We will begin gathering information about another topic this week, using nonfiction (informational) texts and a thinking map to record our key details.

Math: We will begin learning how to use nonstandard units to measure such as cubes, paper clips, etc. We will learn how line up our measuring tools without gaps or overlaps so that we can measure objects accurately. I will post the unit pretest so that parents can begin studying with their children.

Science: We are continuing to look at season and weather patterns. We are noticing changes in temperature, hours of daylight, clothing worn, and characteristics of each season. We look at data and informational texts to note patterns and changes in weather.

Social Studies: We will take our unit 1 social studies test online this week. I will attempt to post a study guide, but bear with me, because I haven’t done this before 🙂

Enjoy your weekend!

“Homework packets”

Hello families! Many parents asked me to send a homework packet home for the break, so I did 🙂 Some of the problems are challenging because many students are ready to take on higher level problems. Please do not have your child become frustrated about the math questions. If they are not ready for these problems, simply skip them! I sent these home for extra practice and because some children are interested in going further. The family tree project is a fun little activity that I hope you all benefit from. We are learning about cultures, families, and diversity, so we are all interested to talk about our own families and traditions.

I am discovering that many students are having a hard time distinguishing between the vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and their different sounds. Please have your child watch the videos over the break at some point. This will help them learn the vowels and their corresponding sounds. I will also add math videos that will help with some of the problems in the packet.

I hope you all have a wonderful and restful break with your families. I will miss my first graders 🙂
