Reading and writing: We will continue to read fiction books. Students should be able to use the illustrations and words to describe the characters, setting, and major events in the story. Additionally, we will be looking for words and phrases that the author uses to appeal to the senses (touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight) and represent feelings. We will also begin working on opinion writing, where students state their opinion about a topic and then give reasons to support their opinion. They will end their papers with a closing sentence, where they will restate their opinion in a different way.

Math: We are continuing to learn about shapes and fractions. I will continue to send extra activities home that will help your child with the skills that they had difficulty with on NWEA.

Social Studies: We are going to learn about human and physical characteristics. I created a power point and sent it in my previous post. Human characteristics are things in the environment that people have created. Physical characteristics are things that naturally exist in the environments such as hills, mountains, oceans etc.

I have assigned lessons to each child on Moby Max depending on areas that need improvement. Please have your child work on these at home. They must click on assignments in order to find these. Thank you for your support!

Have a great weekend!

Tuesday’s homework

Tonight’s homework is a worksheet where students count the sides, angles, and vertices. This unit is the area where most students had some trouble on NWEA, so please study these concepts with your child at home. There are many videos on youtube that can be helpful. You can also request additional worksheets and activities from me.

Reading: We are continuing to read literature. Students should be able to identify the characters, settings, and major events in the story. We are working on distinguishing between important events (key details) and irrelevant events so that when we RETELL the story, it gives a clear, interesting picture of what happened in the story. They are also learning to look at the text features of books to determine whether it is an informational book or fiction book. Finally, we are learning that quotation marks show that someone is speaking in the story. They are learning to use clues from the pictures and the words to identify who is telling the story at different points in the book.

Writing: We made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Thursday and now they are writing narratives about that experience. They are learning to add details to their beginning, middle and endings so that their writing is interesting.

Math: We will begin our unit on geometry. This week, they will look at the attributes of shapes. They will learn to identify shapes by looking at their attributes (how many sides and angels does it have? Are all the sides the same length like in a square or are they different lengths like in a rectangle?)

I am continuing to look at their NWEA scores and I am giving students math workshop stations, activities, and homework packets depending on the areas where they need extra support. These packets are not “due” at any point in time. I am sending them home as extra practice and support.

Have a great weekend and enjoy this sunshine!

Thursday Homework

Today’s homework is a combination of some skills that will help prepare them for spring NWEA testing. They must also find all the misspelled words in the sentence.
