Week of October 30-November 3

Happy Sunday, Families!

We had a lot of fun on Friday, picking a pumpkin and visiting animals at the petting farm. A huge thanks to Mr. Awada, Mrs. Abdulla and our wonderful PTA! That awesome event was our PBIS reward for positive behavior during the month of October. November’s reward will be a magic show and this will only be available to children who “Flip their card ” less than five times next month. Please review the school and classroom expectations with your child as I am hoping everyone gets to participate. Here are our plans for the week:

Reading: We are continuing to read nonfiction texts and this week, we will look closer at text features such as:
1. bold words
2. subheadings/headings
3. Title pages
4. glossaries
5. captions
6. photos
7. indexes
8. labels

Please explore these features with your child and discuss ways to use them while reading a nonfiction text. These features are parts of a book that help readers find information.

Writing: We are working on opinion writing. We state our opinion in the first sentence, provide three reasons for having our opinion, and end with a sense of closure. This week, we are publishing our opinion writing about our favorite special class. We will also begin to write about our favorite pets and try to persuade our parents to buy us one :-).

Math: We are continuing to use different strategies to solve word problems (addition and subtraction) in math. We also begin to tell time to the hour and half hour this week. Students brought clocks home. Please talk about the minute and hour hand on the clock. Students should know that there are sixty seconds in one minute, sixty minutes in one hour, thirty minutes in a half hour, and twenty four hours in a day. We will use the language “half- past” ten o’clock instead of just ten-thirty. I will post the unit pre-test, as many parents found this helpful last week.

Social Studies: We are studying the terms past, present, and future. Students should be able to sort events from their lives into these three categories.

Science: We are continuing to study air and weather. They will impress you because they can identify cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds and tell you what each kind of cloud can tell you about the weather. Additionally, we will learn to look at weather tools such as wind vanes to gain information about the direction of the wind. Tuesday, we will do a special activity for Halloween science.
