Chess Club Important Dates

For your future planning, we will have three after school tournaments coming up at Howard. Each tournament will be from 4-5 p.m. The first tournament will be held on Tuesday, February 24th, the second tournament will be held on Tuesday, March 3rd, and the final tournament will be held on Tuesday, March 10th. I will send home another note with more information about the tournaments when it gets closer to the date of the first tournament.

If our team ends up with the best record out of the four elementary chess teams (Howard, Lindbergh, Haigh, and Long) at these tournaments then we will be invited to the district championship in the Administrative Service Center boardroom on Wednesday, March 25th from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

We will continue the season after these tournaments are finished. I will then hold a Howard tournament with the students on our team every Tuesday and Thursday morning until the end of the season. In the past, I have ended the season with a pizza party after school on the first or second Friday in May. I will keep you updated on this date and more information about the pizza party when it gets closer to the end of the season.

Thank you,
Frank Haliburda

Kindergarten-2nd Grade Classes 3rd Marking Period

These grades will be working on their locomotor skill (sliding) and their object control skill (catching) this marking period.  The classes will practice sliding during a variety of games. I will have them mainly practice catching while they are practicing different skills over the volleyball net. I will also have them working with the parachute for the next few weeks.  Once the 2nd grade is done with their volleyball unit, they will move into this same unit.

Volleyball Unit

All of my 3rd-5th grade classes at this time of the school year are working on volleyball skills.  The main skill for all classes will be the underhand strike/serve.  Once I have taught all of the skills, the students will start their games.  The 2nd/3rd grades will play with the beach ball and the 4th/5th grades will play with the regular ball.  If I feel the 3rd grades are doing a good job with the beach ball, I will move them to the regular ball the last class. The Kindergarten/1st graders will be working on a variety of throwing skills and they will also learn and practice the underhand strike/ serve. Their unit will end when I have had them practice all the skills.
