4th and 5th grade Physical Education

During the 4th and 5th grade year in P.E. students will need to use a lock/locker and change their clothes. This is a big change for most students and might take a week or two to get used to, especially for the 4th graders. I have a attached my beginning of the year letter to help explain what students will need to start the year.  I have also attached the heath appraisal form that I need filled out and brought back to me.

Physical Education Class 2016-2017

Hello,

I would like to welcome students and parents to the 2016 – 2017 school year. I hope that students will have a great experience in Physical Education class this year. We will do a variety of things in my class throughout the school year to help students learn how to stay fit and have fun.

This year I will see the 1st and 2nd grade classes one time a week for forty five minutes and I will see the Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes twice a week for 45 minutes.

The first time I see all of my classes I will spend the majority of time going over the rules and expectations for the year. The next two classes for the lower elementary classes (Kindergarten-3rd grade) I will spend time going over stretches, exercise, red line exercises, and some tagging games that I will play during the year. The next two classes for the upper elementary classes (4th and 5th grade) will consist of recording all of the information I will need for their locks and lockers. During these classes the students will get to play a basketball shoot around game while I am calling students to my desk to record their information.

The third week for all classes will consist of starting our soccer unit with all classes. This unit will continue for just over a month.  I will also fit in running during almost every class to get the 4th/5th grade students ready for their 13/15 min run test and the Cipriano Run.   The Cipriano run will be held on Oct 15th at Ford Field in Dearborn.  There will be more information to follow about the run in the near future.

Thanks,

Mr. Haliburda

May 31

Physical Education Class for the Week of May 31st-June 3rd

To start the week I will have all of my 3rd-5th grade class doing stations.   This will give me the opportunity to access the fourth marking period object control skill for their level.  Once I am finished with the stations during the first class of the week , then I will have them play a softball game.  My Kindergarten-2nd grade classes did their stations last week, so they will play a softball game during their class or classes this week.  I will modify the softball game being played, so that it is developmentally appropriate for each grade level.

May 23

Physical Education class for the Week of May 23rd-27th

This week all of my classes will continue to lean and practice skills related to softball.  The classes will practice the skills with activities and games that I feel are at their ability level.  This will help the students to build confidence, so that way they will feel comfortable moving on to more difficult ones in the future.

My 4th and 5th graders that passed the one mile run will also continue to take the rest of the tests for the presidential physical fitness award.  If they are able to pass all five tests then they will receive the award at the end of the school year.  The 5th graders will receive the award at their graduation on June 16th.

May 16

Physical Education Class for the Week of May 16th-20th

I will continue to have all of my classes work on softball skills.  I will focus on having the students learn about throwing, catching, and batting.  Then the students will have many opportunities to practice all of those skills in a variety of ways.  This will include them practicing the skills in drills and games that will help them to increase their performance for their ability level during their classes this week.

May 9

Physical Education Class for the Week of May 9th-13th

I will be finishing up hockey this week with my 3rd-5th grade classes.  They will play their final hockey game during their fist class of the week.  Then during the second class of the week I will start my softball unit.  This unit will be my last unit of the school year.  The kindergarten-2nd grade classes will continue to practice skipping, throwing, and catching this week.

May 2

Physical Education Class for the Week of May 2nd-6th

My 3rd-5th grade classes will continue to play hockey games this week.  The 4th and 5th grade classes will also go outside for one of their classes week to run the 1 mile run for the second time, if the weather permits it.  I am giving the students a second chance at the run, so they will have one more opportunity to better their time.  Once the run is done, I am going to have them play a short kickball game.  The kindergarten-2nd grade classes will continue to practice throwing and catching this week.

Jump Rope for Heart 2016

I am very pleased to announce that Howard has again raised more than we ever have in the 13 years we’ve been participating in the JRFH program!!   This year the Howard students raised an outstanding amount of $4690,00.  The money they raised will go to the American Heart Association to help fund research to fight heart disease and stroke.  I want to thank all of the donators for their help this year to get our school to this donation amount!!!

Thank you,
