Howard Running Club

Important Running Club Announcement

Due to overwhelming response and lack of volunteers, we have to revise our running club schedule.

Beginning tomorrow (Thursday), we will split the runners into groups.

Tuesdays: Kindergarten-2nd gr.

Thursdays: 3rd-5th gr.

Students may only come on their designated day, and siblings are not allowed to wait unsupervised. Since the weather has been cold and windy we have had to have the children practice indoors, and the hallways become overcrowded with over 130 students participating.  Please understand that we are making this change to keep practices more productive and focused and for the safety of all of the runners.

We are hoping that April’s weather forecast will be more favorable for running outside.  Coach Julie and the PTA will notify everyone when all classes will be able to participate on both days again.

Please note:  Tomorrow’s (Thursday) running club practice will be for 3rd-5th grade only.

I would like to congratulate our chess team on making it to the District Championship ant the Administrative Service Center Board room on Tuesday, March 7th.  Our A team ended up taking 3rd place.  They lost a close match to Howe Elementary in the semi-finals on criteria and then we beat Becker Elementary in the constellation finals to take third.  Our B team ended up taking 2nd place.  They beat Howe Elementary in the semi-finals and then they lost to Lindbergh in the finals.  I thought our team played really well and showed great sportsmanship.  I am very proud of our team and they should be too!!  NICE JOB, Howard!!

Physical Education Class for the week of March 6th-10th

During the start of the week all of my 4th and 5th grade students will take a pre-test on the skeletal system or the muscular system.  The 4th graders will take the skeletal system test and the 5th graders will take the muscular system test.  Once they all take the pre-test, I will have the students practice the different bones and muscles in a variety of ways for the next few weeks during class.  I will then have them take a post-text to see how many they have correctly learned from the practice.

This week during class I will continue to work on tennis/badminton with the 3rd-5th grade classes and the parachute with the Kindergarten-2nd grade classes.

February 8

Physical Education Class for the Week of Feb 6th- 10th

This will be the final week of volleyball games for my 2nd-5th grade students.  My kindergarten and 1st grade classes will start using the parachute as their main activity.  I have a variety of activities to practice with the parachute.  This will last for the next few classes for both grades.  I will also plan to test all of the classes during stations next week on the 3rd marking period locomotor and object control skills.  These skills will include sliding and catching for the kindergarten-2nd grade classes, jump roping for the 3rd grade classes, and the underhand strike (serve) for the 4th and 5th grade classes.

February 1

Physical Education Class for the Week of Jan 30th-Feb 3rd

I will again continue to work on volleyball skills with all of my classes this week.  My 3rd-5th grade classes will play modified beach ball volleyball game, using a jump rope as a net.  This 2 vs. 2 game will help the students learn the rules volleyball, before they play the full game.  This same group will play the full volleyball game, during their last class of the week.

January 25

Physical Education Class for the week of Jan 23rd-27th

I will continue to work on volleyball skills this week with all of my classes.  To do this, I will make sure to teach and have the students practice these skills in ways that are developmentally appropriate for their grade/ability level.  I will continue to have all of my classes lean and practice volleyball skill for the next two to three weeks.  My 2nd-5th grade classes will end the unit by playing volleyball games that are modified for their grade/ability level.

January 20

Physical Education Class for the Week of Jan 17th-20th

My 4th and 5th grade classes will start this week by using their journals to write a review of our basketball unit.  Then for their next class they will start my volleyball unit.  I will have them learn and practice the underhand strike/serve in a variety of ways during the lesson.  The Kindergarten classes will start the week by doing scooter races and then for the second class of the week they will begin to practice volleyball skills that are appropriate for their ability level.  The 1st-3rd grade classes will also start my volleyball unit this week and practice skills that are appropriate for their ability level.  The 3rd graders will only see me once this week because of Martin Luther King day on Monday and because of their field trip to Lansing on Tuesday.
