Physical Education class for the week of March 26th-29th

Tho start the week, I will have a Jump Rope for Heart kick off assembly at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium.  The JRFH permission slip and envelope will go home at the end of the day.  The donations will be due by April 20th.  During the rest of the week, the students in 3rd-5th grade will continue practicing badminton skills over the net and caution tape with a variety of partners.  The kindergarten-2nd grade classes with start to learn and practice a variety of jump rope skills.

4th Marking Period Report Card

The Kindergarten-2nd graders will be assessed on skipping for the locomotor skill and the overhand throw for the object control skill.  Next, the 3rd graders will be assessed on catching a fly ball for the object control skill.  The 4th and 5th graders will both assessed on curl-ups for the physical fitness skill.  Finally, the 4th graders will be assessed on the overhand throw and the 5th will be assessed on batting for the object control skill.

All classes will be learning a personal/social skill for this marking period. This will be part of their sportsmanship grade. The Kindergarten-3rd grades will learn about compassion and the 4th and 5th graders will learn and write in their journals about constructive competition.

Personal/Social Skills 4th Marking Period

The 1st – 3rd graders will learn about the personal/social skill compassion throughout the 4th marking period.  I will constantly remind the students using the poster on the gym will about the different ways that they should use compassion.

The 4th and 5th graders will learn about the personal/social skill constructive competition throughout the 4th marking period.  I will constantly remind the students using the poster on the gym will about the different ways that they should use construction competition.  I will have both grades write in their journals about constructive competition and the different way to use it.  They will also write sentences in their journals about how they have had constructive competition in their own life.

These personal/social skills will be used as a main part of the students grade for sportsmanship on their report card.

4th and 5th grade Physical Fitness Test (Curl-Ups) 4th Marking Period

The 4th and 5th graders will be assessed and graded on curl-ups for the 4th marking period physical fitness test.  The test will be a timed (1 minute) test and it is used to measure abdominal strength.  The standards are listed below:

Chess Club District Championship Results

I would like to congratulate our chess team on making it to the District Championship at River Oaks Elementary on Wednesday, March 7th.  Our A team ended up taking 2nd place.  They started by winning against River Oaks Elementary in the semi-finals and then we lost to Lindbergh Elementary in the finals to take second.  Our B team ended up taking 1st place.  They beat River Oaks Elementary Elementary in the semi-finals and then won against Lindbergh in the finals.  I thought our team played really well and showed great sportsmanship.  I am very proud of our team and they should be too!!  NICE JOB, Howard!!

Jump Rope for Heart Assembly

The 1st-5th grade students will be attending a Jump Rope for Heart assembly on Monday, March 26th at 9 a.m.  The presenter from the American Heart Association will let the students know about the program and the donation process.  The students will be taking home the donation envelope that same day.

I will also have a reminder magnet sent home with the students this week.

My Jump Rope for Heart stations/event week will be April 16th-20th and my deadline for turning in donations will be April 27th.

Physical Education Class for the Week of March 19th-23rd

This week, all of my 3rd-5th grade classes will be starting my tennis/badminton unit.  This will be a short unit, that will only last two weeks.  My Kindergarten classes will practice skipping using a variety of games and activities.  The 1st and 2nd grade classes will start my parachute unit this week.  This will also be a short unit that will only last two weeks.

Physical Education Class for the Week of March 11th-16th

I will plan to test all of the classes during stations this week on the 3rd marking period locomotor and object control skills.  These skills will include sliding and catching for the kindergarten-2nd grade classes, jump roping for the 3rd grade classes, and the underhand strike (serve) for the 4th and 5th grade classes.  During the second class of the week the 3rd graders will stretch, run, and play a between unit game.  The 4th and 5th graders will use their journals to do a review of the volleyball unit and then they will play a between unit game to finish the class.

Physical Education Class for the Week of March 5th-9th

This will be the final week of volleyball games for my 3rd-5th grade students.  My 1st and 2nd grade classes will also finish up this week with volleyball.  They will continue to practice the volleyball skills using drills and games.  My kindergarten classes will start using the parachute as their main activity.  I have a variety of activities to practice with the parachute.  This will last for the next few classes.  I will also plan to test all of the classes during stations next week on the 3rd marking period locomotor and object control skills.  These skills will include sliding and catching for the kindergarten-2nd grade classes, jump roping for the 3rd grade classes, and the underhand strike (serve) for the 4th and 5th grade classes.

Physical Education Class for the Week of Feb 26th-March 2nd

This week, my 3rd-5th grade classes will start playing volleyball games.  I will start by going over the rules and modeling the game to each class, before having them play.  The 3rd grade classes will have modified rules and they will play with a beach ball.  The 4th and 5th grade classes will play with a few minor modifications and will play with the normal volleyball that is recommended for their age.  They will all play 3 games that will be 7-8 minutes long each class.

The 1st and 2nd grade classes will continue to learn and practice volleyball skills this week.  They will also practice catching and sliding during the class.

The Kindergarten classes will start my parachute unit this week.  I will have them learn and practice a variety of activities and games the next two weeks using the parachute.  The classes will also practice sliding with and without the parachute.
