Happenings for October 22nd-26th

8th Grade:

This week students will be continuing the design process by completing the final step in the design process: Communicate. They will do this by advertising their shoe using power point to create a series of slides which will be timed quickly to simulate animation. Students will have 8 days to complete this activity and then we will show our commercials to the class.

7th Grade:

Students will finish up their unit on typography by creating a card using the font they created. We will spend three days on this activity.

Our next unit will focus on structures and how structures are supported. We will use this information to help us in constructing a paper coaster.

6th Grade:

Students are spending this week working on their game boards in groups. The goal is to complete the games by Thursday so that we can all test and evaluate these awesome games on Friday!

Happenings for October 15-19

8th Grade:

Students will begin construction on their shoe models this week. Students will measure the length and width of their foot and then create a full size model of their shoe using cardboard and other materials they would like to use.

7th Grade:

This week we will focus on creating our fonts on poster. Students will need to bring in poster board of any size they like. We will use our measuring skills from earlier this year to create guidelines to make sure our font is neatly done. Posters should be completed by Friday. We will then create cards using our own unique fonts.

6th Grade:

This week students are forming their groups of 3-4 to make a unique board game. We will be organizing ways to construct rules as well as using our measuring skills to form spaces on our board.

Happenings For October 8-12

*October the 12th is a half day!

 

8th Grade:

Students will continue to work on their unit on manufacturing. This week they will use Sketchup, a CAD software program, to create a 3D drawing of their shoe design. Those who finish by the 12th will then begin on their shoe model, made with cardboard.

7th Grade:

Students in this class will be finishing construction of their egg crash vehicles and we will test our vehicles on Wednesday! I will bring in raw eggs for testing on this day. Good luck to all of our teams!

6th Grade:

Students presented their inventions on Friday and will continue to do so on Monday! Tuesday will begin our next unit on board game manufacturing. We will play board games in class and read through a set of game instructions to help us understand how to construct our rules for our games. Students will form groups of 3-4 to construct a game with rules and all items needed to play the game. We will spend 2 weeks on construction of our boards.

Happenings For October 1-5

8th Grade:

Students are finishing up their biotechnology units early this week and then participating in a school day with the use of an arm on Wednesday the 3rd.

Our next unit will be on manufacturing. Students will go through the design process from creating a shoe company with a logo, drawing a shoe design, using CAD to make a 3D design of the shoe, building a model out of cardboard and then creating a commercial for their shoe. This project will take the entire month to complete

7th Grade:

Students are beginning their activity on safety in vehicles. Students will need to start bringing in recyclable materials to create their egg crash vehicles. This unit will take about two weeks to complete.

6th Grade:

Students are working on their projects this week associated with inventions. Both the paper and project are due on the 5th.

Happenings for September 24-28

8th Grade:

Students have begun their unit on biotechnology. This week we are watching videos about people who live their lives with a prosthetic limb. We will have discussions on ways in which people can accomplish daily tasks with prosthetics as well as discuss how the ADA (Americans with disabilities act) helps those with physical and mental disabilities to have the same rights to education, access to public buildings and employment as able bodied people. We start construction on a model of a prosthetic and on Wednesday the 3rd of October students in my class will experience the day without the use of an arm to gain a better understanding of how others with a disability are able to live normal lives.

7th Grade:

Students in this class are finishing up their unit on advertising and animation. They are completing their PSA’s and showing them to their classmates at the end of the week.

Next week we will work on safety in vehicles

6th grade:

Students are working on their inventions activity this week and next week. The goal this week is to complete the paper portion and then next week work on the project portion which is a choice of either a power point, model or timeline.

This Wednesday is a late start, students begin class at 9am!

8th Grade:

This week students are working on their career brochures. Students should refer to the previous iblog entry to find the brochure template. The next unit will be on learning how to use the Google sketchup program which will be used in a later assignment. Take a look at the example of the brochure below:

7th Grade:

We begin this week with discussing advertising and animation. We will learn about a few types of animation and then us that knowledge to create a Public Service Announcement using powerpoint. Below is a website we will use to discuss some ideas. You can copy and paste this link and take a look at some PSA’s on your own.

6th Grade:

Students have completed their unit on measuring and turned in packets along with the ruler they made. This week we begin with Inventions and history. Students will learn about what technology is and why it is important in our lives. We will begin a new unit packet on Monday and will watch videos about different inventions, take a look at Mrs. Fulton “old” technology in the form of antiques, create a poster about technology and then research an invention or their own choosing and present a project to go along with a one page paper about their invention. This activity will take about 2 weeks to complete.

Happenings for September 10th-14th

Just a reminder that we have Open House this Wednesday from 6-7:30 and and half day this friday!

8th Grade:

students are continuing to work on measuring this week with practicing how to add and subtract fractions and how to reduce fractions, all used in measuring.

We are also reviewing on the parts of an inch.

Students will be continuing to work on measuring skills by working in groups to measure items in the classroom. They will also do their first summative activity.

6th Grade:

Students are working on measuring skills by playing measuring based games. They will then complete worksheets which we will go over and then begin their first summative activity which is to create a ruler they can use in class.

A part of learning about technology involves the use of computers in class. We not only need to respect our school computers but remember that what we do on the computer must also be safe.

  1. Read the above article and then type one paragraph on google docs explaining why internet safety is important to follow.  Include things you may have seen about internet predators on the news or have read about online.
  2. Type a second paragraph about what you can do if you witness a friend, sibling or relative break one of these internet rules. Explain how you would feel and maybe how the other person would feel about you getting involved in their business.
  3. Locate an advertisement or poster which displays how kids can be safe using the internet:

Happenings for June 4th-8th

All grades: notebooks are due this week, please look on the board for dates. Also, all graded work must be picked up by June 12th. June 13th will be a clean up day in the technology lab for all classes.

8th Grade:

What a fantastic job our students did on their trays! As our year winds down we will finish the semester with a final project using recycled materials. Students will be using materials to create a catapult and will be competing to see who can go the furthest. Students will research how catapults work and then they will create their catapults this week and test them next week.

7th Grade:

Students will be finishing up their drawings early this week and will begin creating the exterior walls of their house models and measuring all walls to be glued onto their drawing. The floor plan and house model is due on June 12th. Students can also take the opportunity to add some extra credit points to their grade by reading the information in their unit packet.

6th Grade:

Students are beginning their floor plan assignments using smallblueprinter.com. Students will have 3 days to complete this activity and turn in their unit packet.

Happenings for May 29th-June 1st

8th Grade: 

Students are finishing up their trays this week. If students want to bring in their own decorative handles, they should bring them in Tuesday and Wednesday so that we can measure where to drill the holes for assembly. The final two weeks are set aside for students to research was to re-purpose materials into a useful item.

Dates to keep in mind: June 8th: Wheels assembly, June 11th: Cedar Point

7th Grade:

Students have finished designing homes on the computer and are now drawing on paper using the scale of 1/4″ = 1′. They should be finished by Friday with all drawing and many will begin creating the model portion of their home.

6th Grade:

Students have completed their board game manufacturing activity and will start this week with their final unit on architecture. We will use this week to learn about what architecture is and why it is important to us. We will take a look at home styles and begin using smallblueprinter.com to help us create a floor plan.
