We continued presenting our Summer Learning Book Talk writing to the class. Block 2 did not finish and will finish on Monday. Blocks 1 and 3 took some more point of view notes to help them remember the pronouns associated with each type.

Today we began to learn how to “Talk to the Text” where we write down our thoughts (annotating in the margins and using symbols) as we read. This is something we will be working on all year long as a close and critical reading process. We also began to talk about making a claim when we answer questions.
Block 2 & 3 did not finish their “Talk to the Tex” activity due to picture day setting us behind the other classes. This was assigned as homework if it wasn’t completed in class and we will come prepared to discuss the reading “Hang Up and Drive” tomorrow. Due to copyright issues, I cannot post this article on the blog so if you were absent you need to come see me ASAP.

Today we created our online portfolios known as our “My Learning Plan”. This is where students will keep track of their NWEA scores and Academic Goals for this year. This will be used as their portfolio throughout their entire middle school experience with Dearborn so they can go back and see how they have grown as a student. Any student that was absent will need to sit with me this week and complete this as it takes a substantial amount of time to put together!

Today we had a discussion of what a “Good Fit” book is and why it’s important that we are reading. The expectation is that all 6th graders are reading at home for 100 minutes total every week. This could mean 20 minutes every night for 5 nights, or any combination that works for your schedule. Making sure your book is a “good fit” is important so we can be challenged and grow as readers. If a book is too easy (below your Lexile range) then you won’t be expanding your vocabulary very much and will grow at a slower rate. If a book is too hard (above your Lexile range) then you may feel frustrated because there are too many new vocabulary words and your comprehension will suffer, which could lead to a dislike of reading if this happens too often. We will understand more about our Lexile ranges next week when we take the Reading NWEA.

We finished setting up our Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN) today. We also went over Read Theory expectations and how to navigate this site and check on our progress. Read Theory is a tool students can use to practice with informational text and question sets. It also allows for them to monitor their progress with their Lexile level. It is the expectation that every student passes 5 Read Theory quizzes every week. Since this is new and was introduced today, their first 5 quizzes will be due next Friday, September 14th. This can be done at home or in class when students are given time. We also were introduced to our first assignment today which is a One-Pager practice page that is title “All About Me” One-Pager. I will go over an example tomorrow on how to complete this and give you time to work on it in class. This will be due Tuesday, September 11.
