Summer Reading for Incoming 8th Graders

Please find attached a list with some additional book selections for the summer reading, as students/parents requested more titles.
The original list was carefully constructed and contains a variety of genres and reading levels, up to, and including high school level.
This supplemental list contains the same variety, but most titles have a more mature theme, regardless of reading level. These books may better interest those who are looking for something more challenging.

Please email me with any questions.

Movie-Watch and Review

All students (who did not attend the trip to Kentucky) are required to do the following assignment. They will need to watch one of the following movies and complete the attached movie review. All students were aware that this would be a required assignment, if they were not in class this last three days. Again, this does not apply to those students who attended the Kentucky trip.

Watch one of the following:

Hairspray (2007)
Grease
or West Side Story

and then complete the attached review sheet.

All review sheets are due on Monday, June 11th.

Outsiders Quilt Project

As a FINAL reminder, all Outsiders Quilt Projects are due on Monday, June 4th. These are due to me on Monday, whether you attend school or not.

If you’re in school, it’s due at the beginning of the hour. If you are absent, it must be in my mailbox by 3 pm.

All directions and other information can be found in previous posts.

Have a great weekend.

End of the YEAR Obligations

On Friday, June 1st, all Literary Letters and Exit Tickets, and Book Timelines are due AND the Outsiders Quilt Project is due on Monday, June 4th.

Students have all of the information that they need to complete all of these assignments and have known about the dues dates for at least a week.

After doing a random check on the students progress on the quilts this week, I expect many of them will be spending a good amount of time completing them at home this weekend. They have had this assignment for over 3 weeks and were warned that it was a large portion of their grade and that putting it off until the last minute would be problematic.

Quilt Check was Today!!

Today I did a check on the progress students have made on their quilts; it did not go well :(.
Students have had 3 FULL WEEKS to work on this and many have little to nothing completed. There are only 5 days left to complete the entire project. I want to stress that students were given a month, because it takes more than a couple of hours to complete this task.
I want to remind everyone that this assignment is worth 50 SUMMATIVE, test points and will make a huge impact on their final grade for this card-marking (and perhaps the year).
The finished quilt is due on Monday, June 4th and will not be accepted after Friday, June 8th.
See earlier blog posts, if you need details of this assignment.

End of the Year Calendar

Please find attached a calendar of the last three weeks of school for Language Arts. This includes and overview of our activities, as well as important dues dates.

If a student is absent they are still responsible for all work that they miss, especially reading, no exceptions.

Please note that NO “late work” will be accepted after this Friday, June 1st. Also, no Quilts can be turned in after Tuesday, June 5th. If a student will be absent for a “turn in” day, please make sure the item is delivered to the office and placed in my mailbox.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
