Spelling
Practice the spelling pattern throughout the week as usual. Have a parent or sibling give your child a spelling test at the end of the week.
This week we have a new spelling pattern, ER, IR and UR :
Spelling words: over, were, every, under, after, bird, girl, dirt, burn, hurt
Rule: The spelling patterns ER, IR and UR are all r controlled vowels that represent the same sound /r/ like the last sound in the word over.
Notes: Continue to remind your child to “tap it out” even if they remember how to spell the word, it helps with permanent spelling memory. The /r/ sound should only get one tap; it’s spelled with two letters in these words but only represents one sound.
- over, were, every, under and after- the /r/ sound in these words is represented by the ER spelling.
- every- remind your child that a y at the end of a word usually represents either the sound of long I (like sky) or the long e sound (like key). In the word every the y represents a long e sound which can be tricky (Hey! The word tricky ends with a long e sound too!).
- under and after- these words also have side-by-side consonants (under, after) which can be tricky for kids to hear. Remind your child to tap it out and listen for all the sounds.
- bird, girl and dirt- the /r/ sound in these words is represented by the IR spelling.
- burn and hurt- the /r/ sound in these words is represented by the UR spelling.
Reading
Every child should be reading at least 40 minutes per day. This can be a combination of reading on Raz Kids to complete the required quizzes, reading on Epic, or any additional reading your child may do.
Raz Kids
Levels A-J should read and complete at least 2 quizzes on Raz Kids every day (10 per week).
Levels J-Z should read and complete at least one quiz on Raz Kids every day (5 per week).
If you are not sure of your child’s level please let me know.
I will be able to see your child’s quiz scores each time they take a quiz, so they should read carefully and look back in the book to check their answers! If they are having trouble I will email you to check in.
Math
There are 4 Zearn Lessons this week.
Zearn Lessons 9, 10, 11, and 12 will be due on Thursday. If your child finishes all of these lessons on Zearn before Thursday, please have them work on the problem set in their “Learn” book with the Flowerbeds painting on it or their homework assignments in the “Succeed” book with The Bedroom painting on it.
The homework assignments are optional, I have attached them below in case you do not have your book

Writing
This week have your child read one article each day and write about what they have learned, or what they think is most important from the text. You may read the text aloud to them and google or discuss any tricky words- it’s a great idea to have them use the new words they learn in their writing.
Student writing should be at least three sentences long with a goal of five sentences, and it should focus on the information in the article of the day.
This week we are learning about how to stay safe and healthy.
Below are the articles for the week:
Be-Careful-with-Medicines (even vitamins!)
Drink-Water
What-Should-You-Eat
You-Are-What-You-Eat
Social Studies and Science:
Health and Safety
Now that we have completed our social studies history unit, we’ll review health and safety lessons that connect to other topics we have studied in science and social studies this year.
This week we’re learning about healthy eating and the importance of drinking water. You can read the magazine and watch the videos below throughout the week.
