Reading Groups

Parents,

I am using leveled comprehension passages with my reading groups, in addition to books from our book room, to teach strategies for both decoding and comprehension. You may notice that a new physical book is not coming home each day- in order to read each night, please utilize Raz-Kids and you can simply write “Raz-Kids” on the reading log with the amount of minutes spent 🙂

They are doing a wonderful job- thanks for all your support and hard work!

2nd Grade Math test postponed!

2nd Grade Parents,

Our math test is being postponed until Thursday! With our assembly this morning we did not get as much time to practice as I would like. I want to make sure they are comfortable and ready for the test so we will be pushing it back until Thursday! Study guide will come home at the beginning of next week 🙂

Reading Bags

Your child should now have brought home their “book bag”.  Each child has their own bag and will be responsible for bringing it home EVERY night and returning it to school EVERY day.

Your child’s job is to read the book(s) inside the bag every night AT LEAST 3 times (we read it together in class so they should be practicing it at home twice more). Please note that your child may not bring home a new book every night. This reading can be counted toward your 20 minutes of reading each night for your child’s reading log.

Inside of the reading bag you will also find a Reading Response Journal. Inside of this journal you will find homework assignments that match the book we read together that day in our small group. Please have your child complete the assignments so they are prepared to discuss our reading in our small group the next day. Please check the journal nightly to see if there is a new assignment that needs to be completed (there will not be a new one every day). Please keep this journal in the book bag as it will go home every night and come back to school every morning.

Happy Reading!!

At Home Practice

Hi everyone!

I wanted to point out something new that I stapled into your child’s blue OWL folder. When you open the folder, you will see a login cards specifically made for your child. They have their own username and password for each website.

The main resources that we will be using at school, and I would like for your child to continue using at home are:

Reading Eggs and Math Seeds – the login information is the same for both websites (the kids used both programs last year in kindergarten & first grade, so they should be familiar with the layout, but please keep in mind, they have a new password this year).

Raz-Kids – a new program this year and it is AMAZING!! Follow the login directions and get started! Students will be earning dojo points for their use of technology both at school and at home.

We are so fortunate to have the district purchase subscriptions to these incredible resources, so please take advantage of them at home!

Thanks for your support 🙂

Day of Play

Dear Families,

On Wednesday, May 30th we will be having a PBIS celebration to recognize your child’s positive behavior. This month’s celebration theme is A Day of Play. We will be having our lunch outside and enjoying outdoor play, so let’s hope the weather stays pleasant!

Your child may bring a towel or blanket to sit on during the picnic lunch, and we strongly encourage students bring a brown bag lunch since we will be eating outside. However, l a bag lunch (cheese, crackers, or hummus and pitta) will still be available for purchase in the cafeteria.

Thank you,

Haigh PBIS Committee
