We had a great field trip this morning!

Tomorrow morning we go to Dearborn Historical Museum for 2 hours. We will be leaving Howe between 9-930am and arrive back between 12-1230 pm. We will eat lunch as soon as we get back!
Greetings,
On Tuesday, March 11th at 8:30am we will host an informational meeting regarding the incident and the threat to Howe School at the Michael Berry Campus. Danielle Elzayat, Director of Safety and Security will be here with information and to address any concerns. The meeting will take place in the Lecture Hall. Please enter through Door #1, our security officer will be there to greet and guide you.
Thank you.
Amal Alcodray
Director of the Michael Berry Campus: Career Technical Education, Magnet High School, Dearborn Center for Math Science and Technology, STEM Middle School, Howe Montessori and Center Based Education and Dearborn Public Virtual School Grades 1-12
Reminder to send in the reading logs tomorrow morning!
Changing lesson 14 and 15. Instead of doing tape diagrams we will stay with compensation and make a ten subtraction strategy! Many second grade teachers edit this lesson because it is too confusing. I’m going to follow my fellow coworkers who have taught longer and continue using the strategies from the previous subtraction lessons!
*March is Reading month activities AND reading logs!
(Please sign and return Wonder movie permission slip)
*Return to Howe for 25-26 school year! (Orange form)
*Graded math from last week. They did addition problems and were told to use all of the addition strategies to practice. (We practice these daily on whiteboards and they have been the same since module 2). I had them use the stamp game for 10 check page. Please go over with your child. For Iready they can use any of the strategies … I suggest the one the do the best over the next couple months and consistently get the answers correct with. Giving them practice problems each night is a great way to stay sharp on these skills because we will move to subtraction soon in class.
How are we to the last day of February already! Time seems to be flying by! On Monday you will be receiving all the information for March is reading month.
We are continuing throughout March with adding and subtracting through 1000, benchmark unit 7 and talking about the past, and continuing to write fiction stories. The days seems so busy and most days we are getting through it all!
Reminder to have boots and shoes these next couple weeks as we thaw out. The playground is a muddy mess and we need extra shoes to change in to.
Have a great weekend!
We are moving right along! We finished up Unit 6 of Benchmark and begin Unit 7 on Monday! They did great with the Tales/Fiction unit. Some even enjoyed the stories. Books are coming home today. I am still working on grading some of the packets. Those will come home soon. Sorry for the delay.
We are continuing on with Eureka math adding and subtracting through 1000. We use the eureka strategies when doing this. I reminded them that IReady likes to use the compensation and benchmark numbers strategy. We practice that way with the practice problems and whiteboards along with the math lessons and those strategies that we are doing right now- Make a ten. I will attached a reference chart at the end of this post for you to see! We reference it a lot during class to remember.
With our four day week we were still able to squeeze in a science lesson, social studies maps lesson, and do zumba with the rest of the lower el montessori! Next week we also have a four day week then we get back to normal for March!
A very big THANK YOU for getting all of the stuff in for both field trips TODAY!!! I am running the all school field trip so this is SO HELPFUL to have our class stuff done and ready and be able to help all the other teachers and compile it all. Much appreciated to all of you <3
Lets hope its true and we get to 40 degrees next week… we are all tired of this snow and indoor recess… they have been troopers but we are ready to get out and run around!
Have a great weekend! 🙂
Field trip papers (for The Henry Ford Museum) are due by FRIDAY!
I am only sending home fasting permission slips for Ramadan for those parents who request it. Please email me if you need this form. Your child must have the form filled out and signed in order to fast during Ramadan at school.
You have one week to turn in the Dearborn Historical Museum field trip papers. Those are due the 28th. (no money needed… just a signature).
Scholastic news homework will be every tuesday during early release for a homework grade! We don’t have enough hours in the day to get through everything. This is something simple they can do at home. The students know I collect and keep track of it for a report card grade along with the spelling choice board.
Reminder that we have NO SCHOOL on Tuesday, February 25th.
Since I’ve got the time today! 🙂
First I completely forgot to blog post yesterday! I understand about the math lesson and it’s disaster! Thanks to the parents who brought it to my attention. When we practiced and I worked with them on problems they were “adding” but then some of the gear problems wanted them to subtract. By that point they were doing it independently. Eureka was using the word fewer in multiple problems and the kids were getting confused and not reading the whole problems. I realized yesterday when I saw the first email but we skipped math Wednesday because we had to do the valentines crafts instead. We are ahead in math so next week we will spend 2 days re-doing some problems and practicing more from lessons 3 and 4 before moving on. I had already printed additional practice problems yesterday before we left at the end of the day.
The students all know we are taking the spelling test tomorrow to finish this weeks benchmark up. Lots of conversations about our story and being nice. This week has been about kindness with valentines day so they matched perfectly. Yesterday afternoon we did an activity with filling in hearts with describing words for our friends and they each got to fill out everyone else’s book! It was so cool and I can’t wait for you to see them on Friday! I looked through them last night as I was adding my finishing touches on the project. It was super cool to see some of the creative things they wrote about each other. <3
We made valentines for our special education buddy classroom! On Friday we will deliver them! They each cut out the heart, wrote happy valentines day, and drew pictures. They are SO EXCITED to pass them out to them! (A lot of these students have allergies so we couldn’t just add them into our counts with what they brought from home even though I thought about it…. I did not want to give them things they potentially could not have and then it have to be taken away)
Not only did we work on writing about each other we also worked on some self love- This was titled a sweetheart activity. Thinking and writing about things we LOVE about ourselves. They are hanging in the hallway for all to see but I couldn’t help snapping a pic to post for you all to see as well. (I will put the picture at the bottom of this post).
Unfortunately with WIDA testing I wasn’t able to teach science and social studies this week. They seemed to pull each afternoon to complete that testing and its super hard to teach with so many gone! We will just push those lessons to next week because everyone is officially done with the wida test now for second grade.
Remember— If you haven’t sent in valentines yet you need to on Friday! We pass them out!
Also ——send in popcorn money in folders if you want to buy some! $1 per bag. They will be passed out at dismissal.
I will see all my friends bright and early Friday morning! We have the spelling test then off to the Micheal Berry side to play and learn with the high school students wanting to become Dental hygienists.
Enjoy your snow day!
