Content Area Words & Definitions:

  1. millimeters – A metric unit of length. 1,000 millimeters = 1 meter. Ex. The dot on a ladybug is about 1 millimeter wide. 
  2. centimeters – A metric unit of length. 100 centimeters = 1 meter. Ex. A ladybug is about 1 centimeter long.  
  3. grams – The standard unit of mass in the metric system. 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram. Ex. The mass of a paperclip is about 1 gram. 
  4. measurement – Determining the physical quantity of something such as length, time, temperature, or volume in terms of a unit of measurement such as feet, seconds, degrees, or liters.
  5. kilograms – A metric unit of mass equal to 1000 grams. Ex. A kilogram (km) is about the mass of a dictionary.

Content Area Words & Definitions:

  1. tenths – In the decimal numeration, tenths is the name of the place to the right of the decimal point. Ex. In the number 4.3 the 3 is in the tenths place. 
  2. thousandths – In the decimal numeration, thousandths is the name of the place three places to the right of the decimal point. Ex. In the number 4.321 the 1 is in the thousandths place. 
  3. hundredths – In the decimal numeration, hundredths is the name of the place two places to the right of the decimal point. Ex. In the number 4.321 the 2 is in the hundredths place. 
  4. smallest – the least or minimum value. Ex. In the number set, 1.256, 1.5, 1.35, the smallest is 1.256

Content Area Words & Definitions:

  1. square number – the result of multiplying an integer (not a fraction) by itself. Ex. 4 = 2 x 2, 25 = 5 x 5, 49 = 7 x 7
  2. factor pair – the pairs of whole numbers that can be multiplied to produce a given whole number. Ex. 15 has two factor pairs – 1 x 15 and 3 x 5.
  3. prime number – a number with exactly two different factors – itself and one. Ex. 23 is a prime number because it only has factors of 23 and 1 
  4. parentheses – curved marks used to group mathematical symbols. Ex. (4 x 2) + (5 x 2)
  5. composite number – a number with more than two factors. Ex. 16 is composite because it has factors of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16.

Last week students took their spelling test online. To see your child’s spelling test results, have them log into their iLearn account from the district’s home page.

For additional spelling practice, there are a variety of spelling activities available each week in iLearn. Students will be assigned tasks to complete each week. If students do not finish these tasks in the time provided in during class, students will need to make up missing work on their own time.

  1. Upper Peninsula – The northern part of Michigan between Lakes Superior and Michigan. It is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac.
  2. Dearborn – a city in the State of Michigan. It is located in the Detroit metropolitan area and in Wayne County. Dearborn is the eighth largest city in the State of Michigan.
  3. Michigan – a state in the Great Lakes region of the Midwestern United States. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning “large water” or “large lake”. Michigan is the 9th most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area.
  4. United States – the official name for the country in North America that consists of fifty states and the District of Columbia. It is bordered by Canada in the north and Mexico in the south. 
  5. plains – A plain is a broad area of relatively flat land. Plains are one of the major landforms, or types of land on Earth. They cover more than one-third of the world’s land area. Plains exist on every continent.
