Content Area Words & Definitions:
- square number – the result of multiplying an integer (not a fraction) by itself. Ex. 4 = 2 x 2, 25 = 5 x 5, 49 = 7 x 7
- factor pair – the pairs of whole numbers that can be multiplied to produce a given whole number. Ex. 15 has two factor pairs – 1 x 15 and 3 x 5.
- prime number – a number with exactly two different factors – itself and one. Ex. 23 is a prime number because it only has factors of 23 and 1
- parentheses – curved marks used to group mathematical symbols. Ex. (4 x 2) + (5 x 2)
- composite number – a number with more than two factors. Ex. 16 is composite because it has factors of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16.
