Peek at the Week

Another unusual week! We are ready for COVID to be OVER!

  • We had two stories this week. We started off with The Homesick Penguin and finished the week with Sneezy the Snowman. Click the buttons below to enjoy the stories at home.
  • Our core word focus this month is GO. Please remember to send the button back and forth to school.  At the end of each school day, we will record a message from your child to play for you about their day at school.  In return, you will record, with your child,  a message about something they did at home.  Our first core word we are focusing on in January is “Go.”  You would say something like, “Press the word ‘go’ and tell me about your day at school.”
  • Our letter this week was the letter “Pp” We played Hot Potato, listened to popcorn songs and read our book about using all our senses for popcorn.
  • We made penguin hats
  • We practiced fractions

January Objectives

Go, Go, Go!

Dear Parents,

Your child is learning how to use the Core strategy to support his/her communication.  It’s an exciting time with our little interactive learners!  Once they can use Core words, the possibilities are endless for things they will be able to express.  The Core is set up with the first set of 12 words that have lessons for an introduction. Each word comes with a set of books and suggested lessons for both home and school.

I’m sending this letter to let you know that we are working on the Core word “go” this month.

The first book we will be reading is Where, When …I Want.  Your child will have this book at home and also have access to it on our blog page.  One strategy we use at school that you might find helpful at home, is to do a Picture Walk through the pages. The idea of this activity is to create a rich language experience that feels important to your child and allows them to connect with the pictures in the book about things they already know.  As you open the pages of the book, just encourage them to notice things in the pictures.  You might point something out, for example, “that fish is big!”  or “that shark looks hungry!”  You don’t have to expect your child to repeat you or make contributions to this talk in the beginning.  You are providing a model for them to do this as they develop literacy and language skills.

We practice using “go” buttons at school.  Look for buttons in backpacks for them to practice at home.  Please send them back to school each day.  We use them here too!  The more you can practice at home, the better!  I ‘m looking forward to hearing more about the fun you have working with this new word!

Have Fun Reading!

Core Word Go

Please have the students’ new button on hand for this afternoon’s story time. I will need you to record the core word “go” for them. The goal is to get them to press the go button when they hear the word “go” in the story. You may have to start my presenting the button at the appropriate time. They really love to do this, do I am thrilled they all have new buttons at home. You can click the button below to access the story at home for additional fun.

Happy New Year!

Giving you a quick update on classroom happenings. My family, including my husband, have tested positive for COVID. He got his results yesterday evening. I have some cold like symptoms and I am searching for a place to get tested. I had zero luck today and the earliest test I could schedule is on Wednesday. I have a few other places to try tomorrow, as they are not open on Sunday. Ms. Sisoy also has COVID and is not able to return to in-person instruction until next Monday 1/10. She is feeling fine and her symptoms are mild. Beyond thankful that our vaccinations are doing their job! I have put in for a substitute tomorrow so I can continue to search for a PCR test. Ms. Gail will be in the classroom tomorrow. Below is the email from our principal just in case you missed it.

Greetings Howe School Family,

As we return to school tomorrow, I want to take a moment to thank you all for your generosity and thoughtfulness this holiday season. I also want to wish you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.

As you may be aware, covid cases are continuing to spread at a high rate throughout the nation. As we return it is very important that we closely monitor our staff and students and that we are following our mitigation plans. Please help us keep our students healthy and in school by doing the following:

  • If your child or anyone in your household has been exposed over the Holiday Break to Covid, please keep your child home from school and contact the school office for further guidance.
  • If your child or anyone in your household has any symptoms of illness or has tested positive for covid, please keep your child home from school and contact the school office for further guidance.
  • If your child or anyone in your household is unable to pass the Daily District Screener, please keep your child home from school and contact the school office for further guidance.
  • If your child or anyone in your household has a covid test result that is pending-either rapid or PCR, please keep your child home from school and contact the school office for further guidance.

We need every individual to follow this advisory message in order for us to help mitigate the spread of Covid-19 within our school community.

Thank you,

Mrs. Fournier
