Update on Maples during this time

A message from Mrs. Jakubik,

Maples School will be open.

A staff member at Whitmore Bolles May have been exposed to the virus. Dr. Maleyko said it was his decision to close Whitmore Bolles, although the health department felt the risk to the students and staff was very low. If the staff person is shown to have the virus, the District would likely be directed by the Wayne County Health Department on how to proceed.

This virus is a strain of the flu which affects the lungs. Healthy children and adults are at a low risk. We are taking precautions to keep our students safe.

Module 3 Test

Good morning,

Next week, we will have our Module 3 End of Unit test. This module focuses on past topics: multiples, prime vs. composite numbers, division and multiplication using place value/area models/standard algorithm, and how to analyze and solve story problems.

Students will be given a study guide and we will review together on Monday. Please check in with your child to make sure they are caught up on Zearn. The Zearn lessons follow exactly what we do in the classroom. Students should have the entire Module 3 set of lessons on Zearn completed. Part of their homework this weekend is to get as caught up as they can. Students are given some time in class to work on Zearn but a lot of they are also expected to practice at home. Students will also be reminded that they can use their past work from homework/classwork/quizzes from Module 3 to refresh their minds.

I’ve attached the parent letter for this unit as well as some video links to help with the topics on the test.

If you have any questions, please let me know 🙂

NWEA Testing

Reading NWEA will be this Tues. 1/14 and Wed. 1/15

Be sure your child has plenty of rest! Exact Path will be assigned for reading support.

Next week we will be testing Math NWEA. I will send exact dates soon.

Thanks and have a great week!

Moving onto Division

We are moving away from multiplication and onto division. I’ve attached the link to the Eureka Math videos starting with lesson 14 (which we did this week). If a student is ever in need of more guidance, these videos can really help out 🙂

Our key vocabulary words are:

quotient/ remainder/ divisor/ dividend/ array/ number bond/ standard algorithm

We will continue division after our winter break.

News about our homework for winter break will be coming soon!!

Thank you for your time and for keeping up with our classroom,

  • Happy Holidays, – Mrs. Whitford

Marking Period 2

Hello everyone,

I can’t believe November is half over already! We have been so busy and there is still a lot to cover.

First, I want to say thank you to those who I have met at conferences so far. I am so glad to have your support. We all have a common goal of making sure your child succeeds here at Maples and as positive members of the community.

Next, I wanted to share some links and helpful places for you to check out with your student. I was able to add a link to our math videos on Clever. If you click on it, a YouTube playlist will open and has all of Module 3 lessons in order. Currently, we are on Module 3, Lesson 5. This is something students can view if they are absent or if they are needing help with their homework.

I have also attached a link to our Mystery Science program. The link for each lesson is only available for 10 days so I will try my best to make sure it is current as we go on throughout the year.

I will be able to add to my Clever page throughout the year so please be sure to check in from time to time.

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

– Mrs. Whitford

BRICS presentation

This Friday, Oct. 25th, we are inviting you to join our class to discuss the BRICS bond. The entire 4th grade has been working hard on presenting information to the community. Students have created slideshows and posters about the BRICS bond. We are welcoming parents to our classroom from 1:00-2:00. The students are very excited to present this information to you 🙂

Spelling

Hello,

Today we took our second spelling test of the year. Our scores went down compared to our first test. I wanted to review the spelling expectations with you so that way our third test will be back up to par.

Spelling words are given every 2 weeks. I have them written in the planner for students to write down on Mondays and I will also post them on Class Dojo.

Students are expected to complete 3 Tic Tac Toe activities each week using their words. There may also be time for them to practice words in class during Word Work time. Students should be practicing their words many times during the 2 weeks before their test.

Please ask your student about their spelling work. Since we have a test every other week, their grade on their report card depends on these tests. If they are not passing, their grade will be lower overall.

If you have any questions please let me know 🙂

Have a great weekend!

Half Days

Good morning,

Today is our first half day. Dismissal on half days will be at 11:45 AM. This is before our normal lunch time, so please be sure to send a healthy snack with your student. Fruit, veggies, pretzels, crackers, granola bars, etc. Please no sugary items like candy, cookies, or brownies.

Stay tuned to the School Story section on Class Dojo to get a heads up when half days are scheduled. I will also send reminders and we will add it to our planners. FYI: Late Start day is next Wednesday, Sept. 25th. School will begin at 9:35 AM.

Have a wonderful weekend 🙂

Scholastic Book Orders

Good morning,

Reading is all around us. In our math books, during music class, even reading directions for a game we play at recess! Reading is vital to your child’s success and having books and materials that interest them is key.

Below you will find our class code for our Scholastic Book Orders. This code is linked to our classroom account. When I place an order, any books you have ordered with this code will be shipped with mine straight to our school 🙂

https://editions.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=606217

Your child may have mentioned that they were given a book on the first day of school. The first book was “Frindle”. This was possible due to the generosity of my personal friends and family. Each has sponsored a student in our class and I am happy to say each student will receive 1 free book every month! While I am glad to know they will have a few new books this year (10 total!), if you are able to sit with your child and have them select a few books for them to read at home, keep in their book box, or share with siblings, please use the link above. I will be placing our first class order next Wed. Sept. 18th at the end of the school day. I believe the link will allow you to pay with a credit or debit card. If you prefer to pay with cash or check, you may have your child return the order form being sent home today. If using a check, you may make it out to me personally and I will place orders on your behalf.

Thank you so much for helping us share the love of reading! Hope to see you tonight at Open House, 6:00-7:30!

-Mrs. Whitford
