Monthly Archives: September 2016

Updates…

  • Today everyone brought home a bag with cards and directions for a math game. This game provides practice on some of the skills we are working on during Unit 1.  Please return the bag on Monday or Tuesday after you have had a chance to play 🙂
  • Spelling test on Monday and red spelling notebooks will be checked and graded.
  • Math test for Unit 1 will be on Wednesday.  You can use our pretest as a study guide if you would like to.  Just click unit-1-math and print it out.
  • Next week is Spirit Week.  The theme came home in a note on Wednesday.  In case you missed it, the days will be…Monday: College t-shirt/sweatshirt,  Tuesday:  pj’s/comfy clothes,  Wednesday:  Dress as your future career/dream job, Thursday:  Dress to impress,  Friday:  show your Howard spirit
  • We had an assembly for International Peace Day on Wednesday.  Students made pinwheels in art and learned a song about peace in music to go along with our assembly.
  • Last, but not least, we did a fun science activity that focused on properties of matter.  Students had to use their supplies to build a hat that would block out the sun.  I think they did a pretty great job 😉

  • New spelling words came home today in the red spelling notebook. The notebook is due back with the activities completed on Monday.  I also sent home yesterday’s spelling test.
  • Please help your child collect pictures and stickers to help them decorate their work on writing notebooks.  Just to give you an idea of what our notebooks will look like, I googled this image: Image result for decorate writing journalWe will do the decorating on Friday.  I have 2 parent volunteers so far and would love one more if possible 🙂
  • A white envelope came home today for our first fundraiser of the year.  I wish I could give you more information, but that was all I was given so far.  As soon as I find out more, I will pass it on to you.

Math was delicious today :)

We have been focusing on place value this week and today’s practice was extra special.  We built our numbers using hundreds, tens, and ones of a different variety…food!  Learning and snacking – does it get any better, lol?!!

Reminders for Thursday…

Sorry for the late post – technical difficulties have been preventing me from blogging.  Just 3 quick things for tomorrow:

  1.  We go back to the book fair to make our purchases in the morning.
  2. We have gym in the afternoon so please make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes
  3. Our day for getting library books has changed from Friday to Thursday.  Please send library books back tomorrow.  If you didn’t read this in time, no worries, for this week only I will ask the media secretary to let them come Friday anyway 🙂

Happy Friday!

No homework today for your child, but YOU have homework, lol.  Please read all the info on the emergency card that came home and verify that it is correct.  If something needs to be changed or deleted, you can write the changes on the card.  All cards should be returned on Monday, if possible.

Coming up next week:

  • The book fair will be here.  We visit on Monday just to look.  Then we will go back on Thursday to make our purchases.
  • Picture day is Friday.  If you are filling out a picture envelope, you can return it any time next week and I will hold on to it until Friday.
  • Spelling starts Tuesday.  Look for a red notebook 🙂

We have been practicing Read to Self this week as part of our Daily 5 routine in our literacy block.  Our stamina is up to 14 minutes – that’s awesome!!  I snapped a few pics just to share how good we look 😉

Enjoy your weekend!!!!

We started card flips today for behavior.  Please check your child’s planner for their color.  If they changed their color, I did write a note so that you know what happened.  If your child changed their color to blue, you will find a “think sheet” in their home folder that needs to be signed and returned.

So far, it looks like we will have gym class on Thursdays.  Please help your child remember to wear the correct shoes so that they can participate.

I cannot believe that I forgot to send home the Open House invitation today!  Here is a preview – I will make sure it comes home tomorrow 🙂

Welcome!!

(this is a long post…don’t give up, LOL)

It’s official…we make an amazing second grade team already 🙂  We have gotten a lot done in this first week.  We have been focusing on the routines that will make us an effective little learning community throughout the rest of the year – and we are pretty much rocking it out!!  Here we are on the first day of school…

You are a huge help at home by checking your child’s “Home Folder” and their planner every day.  The planner will be used to write homework and to let you know how your child’s day went by showing you what color they ended up on for behavior.  Color changes for behavior will start on Tuesday.

Just a reminder that we do not have school on Monday – Eid Mubarak to all of our friends who are celebrating this weekend!!

Next week has 2 events we would love to have you join us for!  On Tuesday the PTA is having their Welcome Back Picnic from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.  For more details, click here.  Then, Thursday night will be our Open House from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30, so pop by for a few to say hi 🙂

Today we Saved Sammy and had a super time doing it!!  Take a look…
