In Language Arts today I collected the students’ SSR Logs. This is done after the students read in class and is collected monthly for credit. The students are not required to log after they read at home. I will have grades updated by the end of the day to reflect scores.

After reading, the students continued to practice mood and tone by looking at the movie, Frozen. They also looked at the facial expressions of characters to determine what their tone of voice may be based on what their face looks like.

Additionally, we spent time in class learning the types of non-fiction. Then, the students were given an overview of a few books and they were asked to determine the genre of the book with their elbow partner.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Today in Language Arts the class was given time to go to the library. At this point, they should have read three good fit books for the year and should be starting the fourth chapter book of their choosing. If that is not the case, students will want to do extra reading at home for homework this week to get caught up.

After the library, the students were given time for SSR where they could choose between Read Theory and reading their good fit book. We wrote in and organized our Metacognitive Log too. I will be collecting notebooks to check the logs for the month of November on Wednesday after SSR. There should be ten entries for the month of November. Students who do not have this done will need to get their notebooks organized at home before Wednesday.

During class the students started learning about the mood and tone of a story. We discussed that the mood is the reader’s reaction to the text and the tone is how the author is trying to make the reader feel. We used the trailer from the movie Zootopia as an example and then looked at how the mood and tone change if the story would have been written as a horror film. The videos we looked at have been linked to this blog post.

Lastly, we started learning about genres by reviewing the difference between fiction and non-fiction. We will be diving in to the types of fiction and non-fiction in class tomorrow and Wednesday.

Have a great evening!

I hope everyone enjoys the time off with family and friends!

With the remainder of class time, the students continued to focus on the conflict in “Tuesdays of the Other June” by working together to create a CER about an internal conflict in the story. In Language Arts today the students were given time to go to the library. In order to manage their time wisely, the students have been encouraged to finish reading their third good fit book for the year by the time they return from break next week.

When we returned from the library, the students discussed the conflicts in “Tuesdays of the Other June”. We discussed how some stories can have more than one conflict. Then, we practiced writing a CER on one of the conflicts in the story. This was done together in class in their writing notebooks.

With the remainder of class time, the students participated in an activity called “The Last Word”. The students worked in groups and shared their favorite quote from “Tuesdays of the Other June”. The other students in the group had to guess why they thoughts the student chose the quote that they did. After each person guessed, the student who chose the quote shared their thoughts about it. Each person in the group had an opportunity to share and discuss.

Have a great evening!
