In addition to identifying theme, each class began to look at argumentative writing.  We discussed what the difference between a fact and an opinion is and discussed some examples in class.  I have added the powerpoint on fact v. opinion to this blog post.

Fact v. Opinion

Friday, November 7, 2014

Our Language Arts class continued their discussion on theme.  We looked more closely at the theme for All Summer in a Day and supported our thinking with evidence from the text.  We also finished looking at the story All Summer in a Day by watching the movie.  Before we did this, we wrote down what we believed the setting would look like and the characters based upon what we had read and the work we had been doing with characterization and setting.  While watching the video, we described what we actually saw.  We then completed a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two.  I have added the video to this blog post.

Homework:

1. Complete one hour on Moby Max in the Grammar section.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Theme Practice

Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Today in Language Arts the students reviewed internal/external conflict.  We did this by looking at some examples we had already completed and making them more specific with what we know now.  Our second mini lesson focused on characterization.  We discussed what it means to look at a character’s feelings, thoughts, words, actions, and choices. We then looked at these concepts for our protagonist and antagonist in All Summer and a Day, Margot and William. I have added the link to the online textbook for students who need it.  If you did not see me after class for your password, I will not have it at home for you. Today was also our library day.  The students should have a good fit book that they are reading at home for one hundred minutes each week.

1. Complete Margot and William Characterization in your Interactive Notebook.

2. Bring two dividers and tabs to LA tomorrow for your reading and writing strategies.

Coming Soon in LA:

Today in Language Arts the students continued to learn about conflict.  We learned that we can be more specific when identifying external conflicts by trying to figure out which type it is.  I have included the powerpoint we took notes on to this blog post.

At this point, all of the vocabulary books that were purchased have been distributed to the students.  A majority of the work with these books will be done in class.  The students are responsible for bringing them to class every day.  We will be working on the activities in this book that correspond to lesson one.  All activities are expected to be completed by next Friday.  When the students feel that they are prepared to take a quiz on the words, they will be able to notify me of this.  They are able to do this at any point during the next two weeks.  Until next Friday, these will be the ten words that we are focusing on in class.

We are half way through the second marking period and all progress reports went home today.  If your child has a C- or lower in LA, I have sent a report home with them today.  Please ask your child about it.  You may also check Parent Connect if you are curious as to what your child’s grade is but they did not bring a progress report home.  I do not need these reports to be returned to me.

Homework:

1. Read for 20 minutes tonight and tomorrow night

2. Identify and explain a conflict in the story, All Summer in a Day

3. Have two dividers and LA binder for class on Wednesday

Internal v. External PowerPoint

October 30, 2014

Our second vocabulary test was taken today.  I should have grades updated to reflect the scores later this evening.  During class we focused on learning about conflict.  We discussed that a conflict was a problem in a story and that each story can have multiple conflicts.  We practiced identifying the conflicts in All Summer in a Day.

Tomorrow we will be having a team building day and the entire sixth grade will be watching Jumanji to end the day.  This will be our Halloween celebration.  Therefore, students will not be attending their regularly scheduled classes but they will be with all of their teachers for the entire day.

Homework: Reading Log due Monday, internal and external conflict due Monday, and eat lots of candy!

October 29, 2014

Today in Language Arts the students focused on identifying story devices.  We reviewed foreshadowing, inferencing, cliffhangers, and suspense.  We then applied these terms to the story, All Summer in a Day.  In addition to looking at story devices, the students discussed what the mood and tone of our story are.  We came up with definitions for these and practiced identifying how these concepts make us feel as readers.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes, study for our vocabulary test tomorrow, get our mood and tone notes glued into our interactive notebooks, and create a summary of All Summer in a Day.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

In Language Arts today the students reviewed the pyramid of action.  We discussed what each part means and applied this to the story we read yesterday, All Summer in a Day. We also determined why the author would write this story, the point of view, and genre of the story.  Once we were done looking at the story, we played a game to help us review for our vocabulary test.

Tonight is the last night for conferences.  Our team of teachers will be meeting in Mrs. Cosenza’s Classroom.  We will be in her room from 3:30 until 6:30.  Today is also the first day students are able to retake the figurative language quiz.  I will be offering the retake today at 3:30.  Our other scheduled date is tomorrow morning at 7:20.

Homework: Read for 20 minutes, study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday, and make a connection to All Summer in a Day.

Have a great evening!
