Today in Language Arts the students went through a Ceremony of Twelve Simulation!  We worked with the 8th grade students in the auditorium assigning jobs in the community to the sixth grade students.  Each student was called to the stage, presented with their job, and a letter describing their new position.  At the end of the simulation, we reflected on what it must have felt like for Jonas and his friends during the Ceremony of Twelve.

Our vocabulary test will be tomorrow. Each student has had plenty of time to get the necessary information from the word wall.  I have also added pictures of our word wall to a blog post from last week.   If we end up having a cold day, our test will be pushed back to Thursday.  Do not forget, it is late start tomorrow.

Homework:

1. Read for 20 minutes

2. Study for Vocabulary Test

Have a great evening!

Today in Language Arts the students focused on completing the Rising Action in our book.  We read chapters 16 through 18 during class and discussed the last important events that have made up the Rising Action.  We also discussed the characterization of Jonas since he has become The Receiver.  Our vocabulary test has also been pushed back to Wednesday. We spent some time reviewing the terms in class today.

Homework:

1. Read Chs. 16-18

2. Vocabulary Test Wednesday

I hope everyone was able to stay warm during the cold day.  Due to the weather, our Ceremony of Twelve Simulation will be taking place on Monday.

In Language Arts today, the students focused on chapters 13 through 15.  We discuss what is happening in these chapters and how the main events are building up to our climax.  We also made predictions.  We predicted whether or not Jonas is changing as a person because of his position.  We used information from the text to support our thinking. I have added the questions from today to this post as well as the task list. Please only focus on questions 1-10.

Homework:

1. Finish the questions for chapters 13 through 15.

2. Read chapters 16 and 17.

3. Ceremony of Twelve Simulation Monday.

4. Vocabulary Quiz Tuesday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Guided Questions Chapters 13 through 16

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

In Language Arts today the students continued to build their vocabulary skills by working with the words on our word wall.  I have added a picture of our new word wall to this blog post.  Our next vocabulary quiz on these words will take place next Tuesday.  Today was also our library day.  The students were given time to go to the library and select new good fit books.  As a reminder, all students should be reading 100 minutes per week at home and asking families to sign their reading logs that are due each Friday.  Our literature circles also met today to read chapter twelve as a group and answer the corresponding questions.  I have added the task list from today to this blog post as well as the questions for chapter twelve.

Have a wonderful evening!

Welcome back from break and to a new year!  I hope everyone had the opportunity to relax over the past two weeks. We began the new year by reviewing a few key concepts that are needed to comprehend The Giver.  We reviewed characterization and the close and critical chart and practiced applying these ideas to The Giver.  We also reviewed chapters ten and eleven that were read over break.  I have added the literature circle daily task sheet to this blog post as well as the chapters 10 and 11 questions.

Today in Language Arts the students were given time to complete their characterization sheets on the large paper.  They were also given time to answer questions from chapters 8 and 9 as well as read chapters 10 and 11.  I added the chapter ten questions to this blog post because they are in the same word document at chapter nine.  DO NOT do them for homework over the break. Anything that was not finished in class is homework over the break.

In Language Arts today the students continued to focus on the characterization of Jonas. We revised the information we gathered yesterday to create a life-sized version of Jonas.  We also added examples of The Giver to our Figurative Language Board.

The students were given time to read chapters 8 and 9 in class today.  Many did not finish.  They will need to complete this task tonight for homework.

In Language Arts today, the students focused on characterizing Jonas before he was given his job assignment.  The students also reviewed chapter seven and the exposition of the novel on the Pyramid of Action.  I have added the questions to this blog post along with the questions for chapter six because they were created in the same word document.

Today was our library day.  Each student should have plenty of books to read over break.  While on break, they are still required to read for 100 minutes each week.

In Language Arts today, the students focused on creating a word wall for chapters one through six. I will have a picture of the word wall posted to the blog with my post tomorrow.  The class was also assigned to read chapter seven tonight for homework.  Some students finished this in class but many still need to complete this task.  I have attached the task list for the day to this post too.
