Today in Language Arts the students continued to practice analyzing poetry.  We looked at the poem, “Message from a Caterpillar”.  We also spent time reviewing figurative language and looking for examples of figurative language in the story we read, “The Good Deed”. When we found an example of figurative language, we added it to the board in our classroom.

Have a wonderful Wednesday! (Alliteration)

In Language Arts today the students spent time practicing prefixes.  We also reviewed what prefixes, suffixes, and root words are.

The students also reviewed poetry vocabulary and how to analyze the rhyming pattern.  We practiced with a new poem today titled “The Pasture”. After analyzing the poem, we went back and reread part of “The Good Deed” which is a story we read before break.  We then reviewed making a connection because the protagonist (Heather) reads “The Pasture” in the story. The students were asked to write a CER response making a connection from “The Good Deed” to “The Pasture” for homework.  This is something we have practiced before an an example of how to write this CER can be found in their interactive notebooks. I have also typed up the poem on this blog post for students to use for textual evidence.

“The Pasture” by Robert Frost

I’m going out to clean the pasture spring;

I’ll only stop to rake the leaves away

(And wait to watch the water clear, I may);

I shan’t be gone long.-You come too.

I’m going out to fetch the little calf

That’s standing by the mother. It’s so young

It totters when she licks it with her tongue.

I shan’t be gone long.-You come too.

At this point, grades are completely updated based on what I have received from students.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts yesterday and today the students have been learning about making a connection to a text.  We discussed the three types of connections we can make while reading.  Today we practiced making a connection to the story, “The Good Deed” after we read it in class.

The students were also given the directions for One-Pager Number 5 in class today.  There are a few changes to this one pager, instead of a favorite quote, the students are asked to give an example of figurative language and explain it.  The CER response will focus on the mood and tone of the story this time. Don’t forget, graphic novels and comic books are no longer allowed to be used as a one-pager. I have also attached the directions for the one-pager to this blog post.

Have a great evening and a Happy Valentine’s Day!

For the past couple of days the students have been learning about character traits and how we can make inferences about characters based on the things they say, think, the way they act, their feelings, and the choices they make. The have been participating in an activity where they characterize Clark Kent from the TV show Smallville.  We gathered textual evidence from video clips to support the inferences we made and used the clips to help us practice making inferences about characters.

Due to the weather warning for tomorrow, the students also began taking the district writing prompt today.  We will finish this in class on Monday.

IF we end up having a snow day tomorrow, the students are still expected to have their Read Theory and Moby Max completed.  They have until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow to get their assignments done because they have had an extensive amount of time to finish both assignments.

Enjoy the evening and stay safe!

We are FINALLY done with NWEA testing!  When students finished testing this week, they were given the choice between working on their personal narrative rough draft or their Moby Max.  Many students finished but not all.

We will be peer editing our personal narratives on Monday.  Any student who did not finish their rough draft by the end of class today will need to complete it over the weekend for homework because most of our class time tomorrow will be spent focusing on setting new goals for ourselves in Language Arts.

Have a great day!

Homework:

  1. Read your good fit book (You should be on number 5 for the year!)
  2. Personal Narrative Rough Draft Due Monday
  3. Moby Max Due Friday, February 9th

Friday, January 26, 2018

In Language Arts today the students begain the NWEA Language Test.  We will be NWEA testing for the majority of next week so I will not be posting to the blog in the beginning of the week.

When the students are done with all of their testing, they are working on a personal narrative.  They must right about a problem they have overcome in their lives.  Their planning page needs to be completed by Tuesday since I will be looking at it during class to make sure they are on the right track.  Once the planning page has been completed, the students will be allowed to start working on their rough draft.  Rough drafts need to be ready to edit by Monday, February 5th. The students were given the requirements for the personal narrative yesterday and I have included them in this blog post.

I will be offering test retakes for the Unit 2 Comprehension Test and the Unit 3 Vocabulary and Grammar Test Monday before school at 7:15 or after school at 11:05.  Students signed up in class for the retake.  No retakes will be offered to students who did not sign up, are missing assignments, or do not have signed documentation from their parent or guardian.

I am doing my best to update grades as quickly as possible.  I have graded all of the interactive notebooks and posted scores.  The only grades that need to be added are One Pagers Three and Four.  I will have these done by the end of the day on Monday.

Have a fantastic weekend!
