In Language Arts today the students reviewed chapters 10 through 15 of The Giver.  We also discussed examples of figurative language that have been included in the story and added those examples to our chart in our ISN.

Lastly, the students spent time looking at the vocabulary for chapters 16 through 23.

Today and tomorrow in Language Arts the students will be taking the Language NWEA. When they finish, they will be reading chapters 13 through 15 of The Giver independently and answering the Guided Questions.  I will not be posting to the blog tomorrow since the post will be the same as today.

All classroom and library books (except The Giver) must be returned by THIS Friday.  Any book that has been lost or damaged must be paid for.  If students do not pay for or return their books by Friday, they will not be allowed to go to Levagood on Wednesday, June 13th.

Congratulations to Block Two on winning the Read Theory Pizza Party! We will be celebrating after lunch during class on Friday!  Students who are fasting will be allowed to take their pizza home and save it for the evening.

Guided Questions Chapters 13 through 15

In Language Arts today the students were given time to work on the guided questions for chapters 9-12 in their small groups. The students also participated in a Sensory Imagery Activity where they had to use their five sense to come up with imagery for snow/sledding and sunshine/sunburn which are the first few memories that are transmitted to Jonas in The Giver. Anything that was not completed by the end of class was assigned as homework and is due on Tuesday.

We also went to the auditorium during class and participated in the Ceremony of 12.  The students were each given a number, called on stage, and presented with their Life Assignment based on the survey they took on Tuesday. Afterwards, we discussed the feelings the characters in the book must have had based on our own feelings during the ceremony.  We also discussed how it felt to have everything chosen for them like the characters in the book do.

Today in Language Arts the students were put into small groups to read chapters 10-12 of The Giver.  After reading together, they were given time to discuss the guided questions for the chapters they read.  I have attached the questions to this blog post. Anything that was not completed by the end of class was assigned as homework.

In Language Arts today the students spent time exploring new vocabulary words that they will find in chapters 9 through 15 of The Giver.

They also spent time in class presenting the Utopian Society Project. I will do my best to have grades updated as quickly as possible.

In Language Arts today the students spent time reviewing the charts they worked on yesterday in class. The students also spent time reading chapters 8 and 9 of The Giver.  They were also given time to answer the guided questions for chapter 8. I have included the questions in this blog post for students who did not finish during class. The students will be taking their quiz on chapters 1 through 8 of The Giver on Monday. They will be allowed to use their novel to help them with the test but they will not be allowed to use their interactive notebooks. Their interactive notebooks can be used to study for this quiz.

We also spent time talking about the different between dystopia and utopia. We then discuss which category The Giver falls into. Then, the students were given the directions to the Utopia Project.  With a partner of their choice, the students have been asked to create their own utopian world. They must come up with a name, flag, rules, consequences for when the rules are broken, as well as additional information of their choice.  I have included the directions for this project to the blog post as well.  They will also be given all of class tomorrow and work on it. The Utopia Project will be due on Monday.

In Language Arts today the students spent time discussing the guided questions for chapters 6 and 7.  We also added information to our Pyramid of Action summarizing events from chapters 6 and 7. Then, the students were given time to characterize Jonas from The Giver. They were asked to come up with traits that describe him and provide two pieces of textual evidence for each one. If they did not complete this by the end of class, it was assigned as homework.

Today was our last day to go to the library and check out books for the year.  All books must be returned by next Thursday, May 24th, with the exception of copies of The Giver that may have been checked out. If students have a late fee or owe money due to lost and damaged books, those fees must be paid by next Thursday.

We are taking the Reading NWEA today and tomorrow in class.  Since we will be spending class time testing, I will not be posting to the blog tomorrow.

When students are done testing, they have been asked to read chapters 6 and 7 of The Giver.  They must also answer the guided questions that go along with the chapters.  I have attached them to this blog post for students to use.

In Language Arts today the students took their Greek and Latin Root Test.  I will have grades updated to reflect their scores by the end of the day.  I will also be sending home progress reports for Fourth Marking Period on Monday for students who have a 70% or lower this marking OR a year-long average of 70% or lower.

During class, the students spent time reading chapter 5 of The Giver and working on the guided questions. Anything that was not completed by the end of class was assigned as homework. I have attached the Chapter 5 Guided Questions to this blog post.
