Tuesday, October 9, 2018

In Language Arts today the students were introduced to parts of speech.  Since we do silent reading on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we will be focusing on grammar at the beginning of class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To practice grammar, we will be using Moby Max.  The students will be assigned lessons on Moby Max that relate to what we are learning in class. This is the last website we will be using this school year to do practice at home.  The students have been assigned a lesson on Moby Max called Functions and Parts of Speech.  The lesson is due by the end of the marking period on November 2nd.  If the students do not score an 80% or higher, they will be required to redo the parts they did not score well on.  I am encouraging students to get the assignment done before the deadline because they will not have time to go back and fix their mistakes if they score lower than 80%, since November 2nd in the last day of the marking period, which means their grade will be impacted. I do not keep track of time spent on Moby Max, only lessons completed.

We will begin doing stations on Fridays where students will get the opportunity to work on things in class like Moby Max, One-Pagers, Read Theory, and their Article of the Week. I would like to work with the students on these assignments and I know it is not realistic to expect students with busy schedules to be able to complete all of these assignments at home without time in class to work on them. This is why we will be doing stations.

During the second half of class, the students reviewed story vocabulary which we will be applying to the next story we read.  The terms should have been a review from elementary school.  They were….protagonist, antagonist, plot, setting, and conflict.

Lastly, I realized today that the end of the marking period is November 2nd instead of November 9th like I had originally thought.  Usually, One-Pagers are due on the last day students can turn late work in for the marking period, which is October 26th.  Since I made this mistake, I am going to honor the One-Pager deadline that I gave in class which is Friday, November 2nd.  However, if students choose to turn their One-Pagers in on October 26th, I will give them one point of extra credit for each one turned in.

Have a great evening and I’m sorry if this post is overwhelming!  There was a lot of information to give!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Read Theory due Friday
  3. AOTW: Football Injuries due Friday, October 26th
  4. One-Pagers 1 and 2 due Friday, October 26th through Friday, November 2nd
  5. Moby Max-Functions and Parts of Speech due Friday, November 2nd

Monday, October 8, 2018

In Language Arts today the students reviewed the slip or trip activity from Friday and they were given the answer to the mystery.

We also spent time in class reviewing our new NewsELA article about football and whether or not it is too dangerous for students to play.  If students did not finish hovering for words they did not know and labeling the text features,  it was assigned as homework.

Lastly, we checked out library books today!

I noticed that many students forgot to do part of the NewsELA article on Earth’s Atmosphere for homework.  I do allow students to go back and complete work that has not been completed and submit the assignment late.  All late work must be turned in by November 2nd for the 1st marking period. If the assignment the student is making up is on the computer, it is the job of the student to tell me they have gone back and completed their work after the assignment has been graded.  If an assignment is incomplete, I will mark it on Parent/Student Connect.

Progress reports were sent home with students today! Please ask your child if they received one.  I print a breakdown of each students’ grade if I am sending home a progress report instead of submitting my concerns to the office.  This way, families can see exactly what needs to be done to improve.  I sent home reports for any child who has 70% or lower in Language Arts.

Have a great evening!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Hover for words you do not know and label the text features for the Football article on NewsELA
  3. 5 Read Theory Quizzes due Friday
  4. Go back and complete NewsELA Earth’s Atmosphere article

Friday, October 5, 2018

Today in Language Arts the students talked about how to effectively write a CER response.  We did this by participating in the Slip or Trip activity.

Each student became a crime scene investigator and was responsible for gathering evidence about two characters, Arthur and Queenie, after Arthur’s mysterious death. The students read the police report which included a picture and a written statement from Queenie.  It became the job of the students to determine if Queenie was telling the truth or lying.  They discussed with their partners, gathered textual evidence to support their thinking, and explained how their evidence supported their claim.  At the end of class, they wrote a CER paragraph based on the information they gathered.

The results of their investigation will be revealed on Monday!

I am in the process of updating grades.  If something is added to the gradebook but there is no score for it, the computer automatically thinks the score is a zero. I have updated all grades with the exception of their AOTW on Earth’s Atmosphere.  Some students do have a score and others have a blank space which makes their grade appear lower than it actually is.  I will absolutely have every students’ grade updated by Sunday evening. Additionally, I received many SSR Logs with no name today so if that assignment says missing in the gradebook, it is possible the assignment was submitted with no name.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Homework:

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Finish your Slip or Trip CER Response (5 sentences minimum)

Thursday, October 4, 2018

Today in Language Arts the students answered critical thinking questions about the story, “Eleven”.  We discussed them together and gave our opinions about what we would do if we were in the situation the main character found herself to be in.

We also practiced identifying the point of view of the story and we began discussing how we would format that answer as a Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) response.

Lastly, the students were given directions to One-Pagers One and Two.  These are based on their Good Fit Book from September and October.  These assignments will not be due until November 2nd.  They will be 20 summative points each.  I have attached the directions to this blog post.  Block Three did not get to this part of the lesson because their class was a little bit shorter today due to pictures.

At 1:30, Dr. Maleyko came to our school and took pictures with all of our students and their new Scholastic books!  Each 6th grader at Bryant was sponsored by a volunteer who donated $9 to sponsor your child for the year.  For the months of September through May, each 6th grader at Bryant will receive a free book from Scholastic to build their library at home! The new books should be coming home today!

Have a great evening!
