In Language Arts today the students began learning more about nouns.  We spent time in class analyzing common and proper nouns and how we can determine if a noun is common or proper.

The students also spent time in class learning how to be more specific when referencing conflict.  Today we focused on the meaning of internal and external conflict.  We also looked at examples of each from Disney movies.

We will continue to expand on both of these ideas throughout the week.

I will be offering a retake on the Unit One Test from yesterday.  I will have grades updated before school tomorrow to reflect the scores of the assessment. In order to be eligible, a student must not have any missing work from Language Arts, have signed up for the retake in class, completed the assessment reflection sheet (must be signed by a parent), and bring it to the retake they signed up for. Retakes are being offered tomorrow after school in Mrs. Dailing’s room (15) or Thursday before school at 7:15 in my room.

Have a great evening!

Today we ran a different schedule because we had the Pink Shirt Day Assembly for the first hour of the school day. For this reason, classes were a little bit shorter.

During Language Arts, the students spent time doing SSR.  Then, they were given time to get organized since the end of the marking period is one week from today.  The students were given time to double check for late work, make sure their Read Theory was completed, review their AOTW on the Football article, and turn in One-Pagers.

The October Scholastic books were sent home with students today too.

We also spent time in class organizing interactive notebooks.  I will be collecting them on Monday for a grade and looking at them while the students take their unit test.  Interactive notebooks should serve as a study guide for the test on Monday.  Students will not be allowed to use their notebook during the test but they will have their literature books available to them.

Blocks Two and Three played a review game for their test.  They worked in teams to Escape the Room and review for their test on Monday.  Unfortunately, the assembly ran over and Block One did not have time to play.  They will get to play before they take their test on Monday.

I will do my best to have grades updated by the end of the weekend.  There is a lot to grade so please hang in there while I catch up! I will send a Remind when I am finished grading everything I have received.

Have a great weekend!

In Language Arts today the students took their Parts of Speech Quiz.  I am updating grades as students complete the quiz.  Grades will not be accurate until the score is put in.  I will have all grades entered by the end of the day today. Remember, in my class, the retake is built in since all students can check their answer and have three attempts at each question.

After the quiz, the students were given half an hour to continue working on their Setting Project.  At the end of class, we presented our project in small groups and reflected on how textual evidence can help us focus on specific parts of a story.

Don’t forget tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day!

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students worked on their setting project. They were asked to choose one of the stories we have read, “Eleven” or “The School Play”, and find four pieces of textual evidence that help them visualize the setting of the story. After they found four pieces of evidence, they were asked to show it to me.  Once I checked that they had four, they were allowed to start working on the drawing. I have attached the assignment to this blog post.

I will be giving the students 20 minutes after they finish their Parts of Speech Quiz tomorrow to work on the assignment.  The students were told if they needed more than 2o minutes, they would need to work on the assignment tonight for homework. Any student who did not finish finding the textual evidence will need a copy of the story.  I am unable to post a copy to the blog but I have added copies of each story to Google Classroom.  If the students prefer to check out a literature book instead of using Google Classroom, they were told they could check one out after Block 3 or at the end of the day.

Have a great evening!

We also reviewed parts of speech.  We will be having a quiz on parts of speech next Thursday.  This will be our first quiz of the school year!  The students can use the notes they took on the rap song as well as what the parts of speech are (located in ISN) to help them study.  Additionally, parts of speech practice has been added to Quizlet.

The students should be able to login to Quizlet using their school email address since all of the students were signed up at the beginning of the year.  If any student has a hard time signing in, please talk to me at school about it tomorrow because I probably won’t be able to help very much over email.
