In Language Arts today the students participated in the Ceremony of 12. We discussed why Jonas was selected to be Receiver of Memory and discussed how the other children must have felt receiving their Life Assignments. Each student was given a letter with their Life Assignment and a description of their role to take home.

The students also spent time discussing chapters 9, 10, and 11. They also updated their pyramid of action. Then, they read chapter twelve, answered the guided questions for chapter twelve, and worked on a sensory imagery activity. For this activity, they had to use their imagination and their five sense to describe what Jonas must have seen when he received the memories of snow and sunshine. If these things were not completed in class today, they were assigned as homework over the break.

Have a great evening!

The students also spent time reading chapter eleven and analyzing chapters nine through eleven. If they did not finish this in class, it was assigned as homework.

Lastly, the students spent time reflecting on their year by updating their learning plan for their personal goals, academic goals, and NWEA scores.

Our team will be going on a field trip to ice skate! We will be going on Tuesday, June 11th. Permission slips were sent home with students today. Permission slips and money must be turned in to me by next Tuesday, May 28th in order to attend the field trip.

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

In Language Arts today the students worked in small groups to review various aspects of chapters 1 through 8 of The Giver. The groups added information to their pyramid of action, looked for examples of figurative language, and characterized what they know about Jonas so far.

The students were then given time to read chapters 9 and 10 as well as work on the comprehension questions for chapter 8. If they did not complete this by the time class ended, it was assigned as homework.

As the students have been told in class multiple times, I am not giving a final test on The Giver when we are done reading the novel. It’s too much information to cover and would make for a lengthy test. Instead, we will be dividing the book into thirds and taking a quiz on each section. The first quiz will be tomorrow focusing on chapters 1 through 8. The students will be allowed to use their novel on the quiz but not their interactive notebooks. They should use their interactive notebooks and their novel to study.

Have a great evening!

  1. Read chapters 9 and 10 of The Giver
  2. Study for your quiz on chapters 1 through 8 of The Giver
  3. All Read Theory Quizzes due NEXT Friday-45 for 4th Marking/185 for the year
  4. All school and classroom library books due Thursday

In Language Arts today the students took their Greek and Latin Root Quiz. Most students did very well and I was pleased with their scores!

The students also read chapter 8 of The Giver. If they did not finish this in class, it was assigned as homework.

Lastly, we spent time in class reviewing the meaning of words from The Giver, discussing the jobs the people who live their have and how that relates to our society, and the Milestones the children have in The Giver. If students did not complete these portions in class, it was assigned as homework.

We will be done with Read Theory for the year on Friday, May 31st. The students should have passed 45 Read Theory Quizzes from April 8th through May 31st. If they have passed 45 quizzes by May 31st, they will receive full credit for Read Theory for 4th Marking Period. The students also should have passed 185 quizzes from September 10th through May 31st. If students have done this, they will receive full credit for Read Theory for the year which will positively impact their year long average. I will not be grading any Read Theory completed after May 31st at 1:55pm.
