Cisco Unity Connection Notification

For any phone with a discrete number, whenever a phone message is left, that message is sent to email. That phone message also stays on the phone. In the past, users would check for messages on their phone and then delete them. Or, when the message was deleted in email, the message would also be deleted from the phone. With the change to Google Apps, it was no longer possible for us to delete the message from the phone when the message was deleted in email.

In an attempt to make sure everyone knew what was going on, we were informing users that the messages on their phone would be deleted after 30 days. The message looked something like this:

Your message from WIRELESS CALLER, received on October 6, 2015 4:04 PM will be moved to the Saved Messages folder in 2 day(s).

Messages were moved after 30 days to be deleted. Another email was being sent that stated the message would be deleted in 0 days. This has led to more confusion than clarity. Thus, we will stop the email notifications.

Voice messages will be delivered to your email. Voice messages will remain on the phones for 30 days. After 30 days, they will be deleted automatically. The messages will be in email until the user deletes them. Hopefully, this will work better for all involved.

MI-STAR Access

Yesterday, RESA experienced technical issues with our installation of MI-STAR. This led to MI-STAR being unavailable for a certain period of time on Sunday, October 18th. RESA has resolved the issue and is looking into their procedures to make sure that the same situation doesn’t occur again.

Document and Calendar Sharing

Every once in a while, life provides opportunities to test our patience, our learning and our trouble shooting skills. We’ve discovered another of these opportunities.

Essentially, we had a database file go asunder. This file syncs with our Google Groups. We were able to locate the database and recreate it. The file sync was rerun. However, the groups ended up being recreated.

The end result of this is that the groups are now “new”. They have the same names. They have the same individuals in them. However, they now have new identifier numbers. These new identifier numbers are crucial.

Calendar Items and Documents that are shared will most likely need to be shared again.

The exceptions are calendars and documents that are public. These will remain public. We have put some additional procedures in place so that we can maintain the same identifiers should this ever happen again.

Until our next learning opportunity…

iLearn Experience

One of our coaches is working with a group of Chemistry teachers. The coach was able to create a quick 4 question quiz in iLearn. The students then took the quiz on their phones. The teachers used the results of the quiz to divide the students into 3 groups. One group is working with the content teacher, one group is working with the co-teacher, and one group is working independently.

It is terrific to see the technology supporting excellent instruction.

This just in…

Our class has become at least a half digital or technology based class.

Thanks so much. The chrome books are amazing. Our 12th graders are enjoying the fact that our class is similar to college courses.

This email was received today. It highlights the experience of students and teachers utilizing the technology in the classroom. We will be continuing to roll out Chrome books in classrooms.

Required Yearly Staff Training

Each and every year, staff members need to complete training in three areas:

  • Response to Bullying Behavior
  • OCR
  • Bloodborne Pathogens

In order to facilitate flexibility, these courses are available for staff online. Every staff member should’ve received badges last year. These will be showing up as expired now.

The new courses are now available for the 2015-2016 school year. Once you sign into iLearn, you will see a link to the three required courses. Please follow the directions carefully for each course.

Once you have completed a course, you will automatically receive a badge (please note that it may take up to a half hour for the badge to appear). You need to acquire all three badges.

Phone Voice Mail

With our change to Google Apps, Voice mail from phones also changed. Currently, any time a voice mail is left, a copy of that voice mail is sent via email to the end user. This means that there are two copies of the voicemail. Thus, deleting the voicemail from email has no effect on the phone (thus, the red light stays on). Similarly, deleting the voice mail on the phone has no effect on email (one more “unread” email).

This means that we have been saving a whole lot of voicemails for a long time. We have changed settings so that all voicemail will be automatically removed from the phone system after 29 days (we have unlimited email storage, so the voicemail will still be in email).

Essentially, you don’t have to do anything. However, be aware that voicemails older than 29 days will no longer be saved on the phone. If you are not getting voicemails in your email, please check your SPAM folder. If you still are not getting voicemails in your email inbox, please complete a HelpDesk ticket.

Desk phones:

Voicemails for those with a set phone number that is on a Cisco phone will see a red light when voicemails are present. Deleting the voicemails from phone will remove the red light. Voicemails will still be available via email. Voicemails can be saved or deleted in email. Voicemails can be deleted via the Messages button on the phone or will automatically delete after 29 days.

“Teacher” Numbers:

These are numbers that are not tied to a specific phone. Voicemails should be available in email. Voicemails can be retrieved via the Voicemail system, but these voicemails will be removed after 29 days. Voicemails will stay in email unless the user (that’s you) deletes them.
