Hello families, I hope you enjoyed the beautiful fall weather this weekend! This week we will have two more nights of parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Thursday. Please remember the hungry as you donate canned goods this week for the November canned food drive. We will also continue our healthy living program this Wednesday. Here’s our focus for the week:
Math – We are learning to measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects.
Reading – We are learning how to determine meaning of unknown words in a text and determine the meaning of literal and nonliteral language.
Social Studies – We will understand the difference between the roles of state and local government by giving examples of each. We will describe the purpose of the Michigan Constitution.
Science – We will plan and carry out fair tests with controlled variables by measuring the distance a cart travels and recording it on a data table.
Writing – We will write opinion pieces and develop our writing through the writing process.

We are officially beginning card marking 2 this week. This is a chance for everyone to start over and set some goals for things they’d like to improve on from the first card marking. We will be working on goal setting this week. Make sure to ask your child about his or her reading, math, and personal goals. Parent-teacher conference reminder notes will be sent home Monday. Please make sure to sign the bottom portion and return it to school tomorrow. Monday is library day. Please make sure students have their books. Tuesday is election day, so there is no school for students. The third grade team will be hosting a bake sale that day for all the voters in hopes to raise some money for our upcoming Lansing field trip. The more money we can raise prior to the trip, the less we will have to charge students. Please consider donating baked goods if you can. They can be dropped off in the school office on Monday. And if you have an hour or two free on Tuesday and are willing to help run the bake sale, we could always use parent volunteers. Just send me an email or note with your child on times you might be available, and I will contact you. Miller is also hosting a canned food drive beginning on Monday. Any donations would be appreciated. Here is our focus for this week.
Math: We will continue measuring time to the nearest minute and then move into measuring liquid volumes and masses of objects.
Science: We will use our measurement and data skills from math to measure the distances carts will travel based on different designs. Students will try to create a cart that will travel the greatest distance.
Social Studies: We will begin the unit on government to prepare students for the field trip in February. This week they will learn how a representative government works.
Reading: We will be asking and answering questions about fiction stories by supporting answers with key details from the text.
Writing: We will begin our next unit on opinion writing. This week we will study some student samples and learn the elements of good opinion writing.
Miller Elementary School is partnering up with HYPE Athletics for a Thanksgiving canned food drive. We will be collecting canned or boxed food from November 4 – 14. The class with the post donated cans will win a pizza and ice cream party and an hour of recess! All donations are accepted and appreciated! Click the link above for more information.
