Welcome to our first full week of school! We are off to a good start and now it’s time to really get to work. We will continue testing this week with NWEA language, DRA, and finalizing testing that began last week. This week will start spelling. Words will come home every Monday with a test on Friday. Students should study daily to become proficient by the end of the week. Spelling is linked to reading and writing, so students that can recognize spelling patterns are more likely to become better readers and writers. We have Open House on Thursday from 6-7:30pm. Here is what we will be learning about this week.

Math: We will start exploring the relationship between multiplication and division.

Science: We will start our first unit on motion by exploring how magnets interact with different objects.

Social Studies: We will be focusing on natural characteristics of Michigan including landforms and bodies of water.

Reading: We will be learning how stories are broken up into beginning, middle, and end and also analyzing how the illustrations in a story help us understand it better.

Writing: We will continue studying mentor texts to see what good authors do. Later in the week we will start generating our own writing ideas for a personal narrative.

Please make sure your child reads every night for about 20 minutes. I’m looking forward to a great week ahead!

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the long Labor Day weekend and is well rested. This week we will begin testing for NWEA, I-Ready, and DRA. These tests will help us as parents and teachers to see where the students are at in their educational journey and make a plan to help them to grow through the school year. In between testing we will dive into the third grade curriculum. Here is what we will be learning:

Writing – Students will learn about personal narrative writing and examine what good authors do to make their true stories come to life for the reader.

Math – We will continue to work in Module 1 with repeated addition, equal groups, and concepts of multiplication. We will focus on multiple strategies for solving problems. This year students will be tracking their online lessons passed on the Zearn website. Students can access this from home, and I would encourage you to set a few minutes each day for students to practice.

Social Studies – We will look at what aspects make up a State as we begin our study of the geography of the state of Michigan. We are studying how we are part of a larger community. Please make sure your child knows their address as we are learning how their homes are part of a city, county, state, country, continent, and planet.

Reading – Students will discuss character traits from a fiction text and analyze how that character acts in a story based on their character traits.
