The Martians landed and then ran to the finish line!!!

Martian Runners!!!! So excited to get to the start line!

Henry Ford Martian Marathon Runners made the front page of the Press and Guide Newspaper!! Wow!!

Teachers who came to help and cheer on the Henry Ford Runners!  Thank you!

I ran the 5K (3.1 miles) at 8 am, before the students ran their race at noon!

What a beautiful day it was!  This past Saturday was Martian Marathon Saturday!  The sun was out, the air was a bit cool, but that didn’t bother the 34 Henry Ford Runners that lined up at the start line for the Martian Marathon 1.2 mile run at Ford Field Park in Dearborn!  They ran on the grass, up the BIG hill, across the top, down the BIG hill, into the woods, out of the woods and sprinted to the finish line!!!  Friends and families cheered them on!!!  In all, counting the miles they ran in running club, the runners ran a full Marathon – that’s 26.2 miles!!!! Great going runners!!!  If you see any student with a black t-shirt with flying saucers on it, you’ll know they ran the race!!!

A BIG THANK YOU goes to Mrs. Spencer and Mrs. McCormick for all of their help on race day.  They checked in runners and made sure they were ready to run.  Also, THANKS to Mrs. Hammoud, Mrs. Fawaz and Mrs. Shupe for cheering on all of the runners!!!

Healthy Tidbit:  Because of the race, running and sweating, I thought I’d talk a little bit about hydration.  The best thing you can drink after a sweaty activity is……………….WATER – you guessed it!  The second best thing you can drink after a sweaty activity is………………….milk – white  or chocolate.  Both of these drinks provide hydration for the average athlete. Instead of a gatorade or other sports drink, the average athlete should refuel with water or milk and a variety of foods that contain carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins and minerals.  For example, eat a whole-wheat bagel or toast with peanut butter or a banana with peanut butter.

The Martians are coming, the Martians are coming!!!

Well………..it’s time for the Kid’s Mini Martian Marathon!!!!!!!!!!!!  Students from the running club will line up at the starting line this Saturday, April22nd!!!  They will be running 1.2 miles at Ford Field in Dearborn.  When they have finished the race, they will have completed a full Marathon!!!  That’s 26.2 miles.  Running Club begins in September each year for 4th and 5th graders.  The runners log their mileage each week and by the time the Martian Marathon begins, they will already have run 25 miles.  Add that to the 1.2 they will run this Saturday and it equals 26.2-a full marathon!!  Congrats Runners!

4th Marking Period:  K through 4th grade are working on throwing and catching and skipping.   5th grade is working on batting and stretching for their flexibility test!

Volleyball Team practice will begin in 3 weeks!

Healthy Tidbit:

-NOW IS THE TIME TO BECOME MORE ACTIVE!  The weather is nicer and going outside is more fun due to the warm weather.  Can you think of activities you can do to move your body?

How about:  Jogging or walking around the block.  Get your bike, skates, skate board or scooter and move around the block with it.  Motorized items don’t count!  Climb the monkey bars or swing on a swing.

Whatever you do, do it everyday – – at school AND at home!

-EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN AND  FOR TAKING TESTS!  Touch your toes or do modified jumping jacks before taking a test – it wakes up your brain!
