Good morning!

Yesterday and today we have focused on the skill of summarizing in ELA. We completed pages 77-79 in our workbooks yesterday, and today we will practice summarizing an informational text about Thanksgiving. Today is also the PBIS student vs teacher dodge ball game! 🙂

Homework over break: Please make sure that you all complete quiz corrections on the theme quiz that was handed back to you in class. This will have a significant impact on your grade! Remember, in order to earn back full points you must complete both portions of the Learning Target Correction Form.

Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving break! We are so thankful for you all!!

Wednesday, November 20

Hello all! Today we continued to practice theme, central idea, and CER. We read the short story “A Tricky Monkey” and used all of our CER examples to help write a CER about the theme. If you were absent today, please complete this at home. Our quiz on theme, central idea, and CER is this FRIDAY.

Please also remember to bring in cans or money to A2 to support Woolworth’s Battle Against Hunger! 🙂

Monday, November 18

Happy Monday! Today we continued to work on our current skills of theme, central idea, and writing strong CER paragraphs. Students wrote and labelled the parts of an effective theme analysis paragraph with two pieces of evidence in their notebooks and spent time working on their weekly ReadTheory. We also began working on our new root word- poly (poly means many).

Our next quiz is this Friday! This quiz will cover theme and central idea. Students will be asked to write a CERER paragraph for their short answer. Feel free to come to us with any questions.

Also- remember to be checking your grades and make sure you turn in your characterization quiz corrections 🙂

Wednesday, November 13

Happy conference day!

We have begun working on two new skills: analyzing central idea and analyzing theme. On Monday we took notes on theme, and students practiced with a partner and independently.

Today, we worked on pages 69-71 in our workbooks as we continued analyzing central idea and theme. We completed this practice with the support of a group, and students completed one final independent practice at the end of class as a way of checking in on their progress.

Our bellwork focus for this week is identifying parts of speech. Students stapled a guide to parts of speech in their notebooks, and we will continue referring to this and using it to help us as we break apart sentences.

Conferences are tonight from 3:30-6:30! We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Thursday, November 7

Happy Thursday!

Today we had our class Root Word Challenge. We tried to come up with as any words as possible that use the root mono. Some especially impressive words that students came up with were monomania (an obsession with one thing) and monospecific (specific to one species).

We also continued to practice for our Character Development Quiz tomorrow. Students read the short drama “King Alfred” and analyzed how the main characters responded to events within the story. Tomorrow students will need to turn in three things: 1. Vocabulary Tracker for Characterization 2. Green Reading 4Square 3. ReadTheory quizzes (this will be checked online-but it is due tomorrow).

Students also received permission slips for the December field trip to Henry Ford Museum. Permission slips and money need to be returned to Core 1 teachers by MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11th. This is extremely important!! Please make sure to bring in the permission slip and money ASAP in order to attend 🙂

Friday, November 1st

Before we all start enjoying our weekend, a few updates:

  1. Card marking 1 grades will be updated this weekend. Card marking 2 begins next week.
  2. If you were ABSENT on Friday, you may turn in your completed All Summer in a Day Close and Critical project on Monday.

Today we finished our final square of the project. Students made text to text, text to self, or text to world connections. We will continue to practice making effective connections with our good fit books next week. The projects look AMAZING. Make sure to share with your family when you take them home!!

Wednesday, October 30

Hi all!

Today we continued to work on the students Close and Critical project analyzing “All Summer in a Day”. Students each analyzed a metaphor from the story in order to answer the question “HOW did the author tell the story?” If any student missed this step of the project, they must complete the FIRST page of the following document (only the metaphor analysis- not the simile)

The final project is due FRIDAY, and it needs to be turned in on Friday in order to be graded before the end of the card marking!! Make sure you are keeping up with the work!

Tuesday, October 29

Hello everyone!

We are also working on a Close and Critical Reading project on this story. Last Friday, students completed a plot pyramid for “All Summer in a Day” and yesterday they made covers for the project using analysis questions about Margot. The character analysis cover needs to be completed and glued on before the final project is turned in on Friday.

Today we reviewed similes and metaphors in “All Summer in a Day” and practiced analyzing some examples. This was in preparation for tomorrow when students will be closely analyzing passages from the text to locate and explain why Ray Bradbury used figurative language. This analysis will be included in the final Close and Critical Reading project.

The simile/metaphor 3 step analysis is due tomorrow. Students may choose any similes or metaphors from the sort posted below.

Spirit week reminders:
Wednesday is COLOR WARS! All 6th graders need to wear as much green as possible. Wednesday is also the PBIS movie reward.
Thursday is Halloween. Students may wear a costume if they bring in $1 for a costume pass.
Friday is Woodworth Spirit Day. Wear all of your Hornet gear. We are celebrating Hornet pride with a school-wide assembly at the end of the day.
