Parents Can Preview Possible Curriculum Changes

Posted by Suzanne Schug on May 29, 2020 in Class News |

Dearborn Public Schools is offering a chance for parents and community members to explore two new
curriculum resources the District is recommending for next year – one for elementary English Language Arts and
the other for some high school math. Both curriculums provide extensive digital resources that are available
for school and home use.

Interested parents can view some of the materials online and then learn more about the resources during online
meetings on Monday for the elementary program and Tuesday for the math program.

Both curriculum resources have gone through extensive evaluation by Dearborn teachers and have been
recommended by the District’s curriculum committee. This is part of the District’s regular process to update and
implement new curriculum.  Please note, these changes have not yet been approved by the Board of Education.

Elementary Reading and Writing
Elementary parents are invited to learn more about the Benchmark Advance English Language Arts program
that the District is considering for all the kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms.
Benchmark Advance © 2021 is a standards-based, core English Language Arts program. Language arts
includes reading and writing and also impacts text-based resources for science and social studies.  The Benchmark
program provides lessons and practice in all areas of reading including phonological awareness, phonics and word
study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Writing is also included.

Parents are invited to attend a Zoom meeting with Benchmark representatives for more information and
a Q & A session on Monday, June 1 from 5 to 6 p.m.  Please email communications@dearbornschools.org
for information on logging into the Zoom meeting and to get login information to view a sample of the
digital curriculum material.

A big thank you to Lilly’s family!  They have been taking wonderful care of Harvey until I could pick him up today.  Harvey and I did go see his favorite retired custodian and girlfriend Ms. Jan.  He is getting reacquainted with Stan and Luna.  🙂  Thank you so much, Schroeder family for all of your help!  🙂

Updates for the Week of May 25

Posted by Suzanne Schug on May 25, 2020 in Class News |

Very Happy Eid to all of those celebrating!

Thank you so much for your support of your child’s education from home in these last difficult months. Adjusting the roles of everyday life have been challenging for all.  It has truly been an honor teaching this group of young bright minds.  This special group of kids make me laugh and smile every day.

There are  2 more weeks of online learning. The new Google Classroom and on the attached assignment calendar this week and next.  Again, please have your child do his/her best.  What’s important is to continue the love of learning during this time.  A report card will be based on participation for this marking period.

Teachers will be in the buildings this week packing up classrooms 🙁 and emptying and bagging each student’s belongings :). These belongings can be picked up at the school (much the same way as the math book distribution) this Thursday, May 28 from 11:30 – 2:30 P.M In front of parking staff lot on Lawrence Ave.  Please also drop off Howard library books.  Any books from my classroom please keep at home for drop off later in the fall.  Chrome books will not be collected at this time.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Distribution of Student Belongings and Returning of School Belongings on 5/28 11:30-2:30 pm

Posted by Suzanne Schug on May 25, 2020 in Class News |

 by Mirvat Sabbagh

Good Evening Howard Families,

We hope that you and your loved ones enjoyed this holiday weekend and had time to take a break from the new norm of the “remote lifestyle.”  🙂  We are gearing up for the end of the school year and we wanted to give you a heads up about this coming Thursday, May 28th.  On Thursday, May 28th from 11:30-2:30 pm we will have a distribution of student belongings.  Students will receive personal belongings from their desks in a brown bag labeled with their name on it.  If you have a specific item that you are concerned about (i.e. jacket, eyeglasses etc…), please be sure to communicate with your child’s teacher so that we do not miss anything important.  Additionally, we will be asking that students return specific school belongings back to the school on this distribution day.  Your child’s teacher will communicate with you about what specific item(s) to return on that day, examples of items may include (LLI books, library books, reading bags, textbooks, instruments for 5th graders, and safety belts).  We will NOT be asking you to return Chromebooks at this time so please hang on to those for now.  You may come to the school anytime during the 3 hour time frame (11:30-2:30 pm) on May 28th.  It will be a drive-up format so please remain in your vehicles at all times. Drive-up locations around the school will be coordinated with normal after school pick-up locations.  Please see below for a reminder of where to drive-up depending on the grade-level(s) of your child(ren).  As a friendly reminder, parents and students are not allowed in the building for their safety so please remain in your vehicles at all times.  Thank you for your continued flexibility and patience during this unprecedented time.

Stay safe,
Mirvat Sabbagh

Updates for Week of May 18

Posted by Suzanne Schug on May 17, 2020 in Class News |

Hello, families,

Happy birthday to Abbas!  May 17 🙂 and Happy birthday to Adam!  May 18 🙂

I just got done reading some well written frog reports!  They were sent back with comments and areas on the rubric that need to be focused on.  Please have your child make any necessary changes and return to me through Google Classroom.  They really were a lot of fun to read.  I can’t wait to read the final reports later this week.

The new online learning calendar has been posted on the Online Learning Page  in Google Classroom.  Remember, the calendar has taken place of the planner and lets your child know what activities should be completed.  The Google Classroom is like your child’s backpack.  Please check Google Classroom to see what assignments have been completed.  Your child will be graded on effort this marking period.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.  Please give your child a gigantic hug and kiss for me.

Your partner in education,

Suzanne Schug

Updates for the Week of May 11

Posted by Suzanne Schug on May 10, 2020 in Class News |

Hello, families,

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

I hope all parents, both moms and dads alike, enjoyed a relaxing day. Being a parent and your child’s teacher is stressful to say the least. I appreciate all that you have done to support 3rd grade’s teaching efforts. Thanks so much for the cards, pictures, and generous gifts cards. There is nothing I would rather be gifted with then the opportunity to teach your children in the classrom.

The online calendar has been posted on the blog and on top of Google Classrom stream. Please have your child complete the tasks to the best of his/her ability. It would be helpful if you could double check the tasks before they are submitted. Some work is still being turned in without being attempted.

As always, please adjust the assignments to meet the needs of your child. If you have any questions of concerns, please contact me at schugs@dearbornschools.org.

Ms. Schug 🙂
