Movement Monday

Last week I spoke with our adaptive gym teacher, Ms. B.  She asked me to tell all of you how much she misses you!

Check out her blog for movement ideas: https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/budopw/

*Parent please note that Ms. B teaches students of different ages and abilities so only choose the activities that are most appropriate for your child*

Here are some ideas to get your child moving today:

  • Place pillows on the floor and have your child step on them one at a time
  • If your child is not walking yet place pillows in different areas of the room and have them crawl from one pillow to the next
  • Practice rolling a ball back and fourth to each other
  • Create tunnels out of couch cushions or coffee tables and blankets and have your child crawl through
  • If your child is not walking yet place a desired item out of reach to encourage them to tall knee

Fine Motor Friday

On a normal Friday at school we practice our fine motor skills.

Here are some ideas you can try at home today to help your child practice their skills:

  • Color with crayons
  • Make shapes with tape and then trace each shape with small objects such as blocks, coins, or pasta
  • Build with blocks
  • Scoop cereal with a spoon and transfer it between two bowls
  • Open and close bottles – preferably empty so there’s no mess 🙂

Speech Ideas

Here are some ideas for how to work on speech while playing with your child.

When playing with blocks, puzzles, ball, bubbles, etc.:

  • Work on taking turns/joint attention
  • Label the toy – type, color, size
  • Withhold the toy until your child requests it through sign/gesture/word
  • Use core vocabulary when playing: up, down, in, out, on, off, more

When playing with toy cars:

  • Make car noises “beep beep, vroom, crash”
  • Make your cars STOP and GO.  At school the children like when we do a 1, 2, 3 count before ex: “1, 2, 3…Go!”
  • Say “uh oh” or “oh no” and make the cars crash into something

Free Friday!!!

Hi, boys and girls! Thank you for everyone who attended our Google Hangout meeting. It was so nice to see all of your beautiful, smiling faces! Our meetings are bittersweet; I am so glad that we are still able to connect but it also breaks my heart because I cannot see you.

FREE FRIDAY: Today is such a nice day outside that I just want you to go outside and play! Use your fine motor skills and play with some sidewalk chalk. Go on a walk with your families and identify the colors of the cars that you see.

Have a great weekend- it’s supposed to be beautiful!

As usual, I love and miss you all so much! Sending your big hugs. Xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxooxo
