Constructing a Map Second Grade Activity
On the provided construction paper, students will construct a map. Students will create streets (minimum of 4-5 streets). They need to name the streets. Students will also include a map key specifically for their map. The symbols on the map key need to be colored the same colors as on the map. Students will then place the different symbols on the map. Attached, you will find some symbols that students may use; however, you are not limited to these symbols. Feel free to create your own using magazines clippings, computer-generated symbols, and/or hand-drawn symbols to represent places and objects for your map. Students will also need to include a compass rose and title for their map. All maps are due no later than Thursday December 1, 2016!
Students will be graded on the following:
Title
Minimum of 4 (straight) roads
Roads have names
Compass Rose present
Minimum of 5 symbols on map
Symbols used are present on map key
Words spelled correctly
Symbols are colored/cut/glued neatly
Name is clearly visible on back of map
Please keep in mind that we have been learning about maps in social studies for the past few weeks of school and your child is capable of doing this activity on his/her own. While they may need/want your assistance, parents and siblings are not to do the assignment FOR the student. Assistance is always encouraged, but please allow the student to do a majority of the work. All maps are due no later than Thursday December 1, 2016!
