Reading Lesson- 03/23

Today’s reading lesson was just posted in Google Classroom! Make sure to take a look at my first attempt at a screencast!

For today’s reading mini-lesson we will start learning all about Story Mountains (Plot Mountains). A Story Mountain is a tool that is used to help recount stories/dramas. When you were in Kindergarten-Second Grade you mostly used the retell strategy of beginning, middle, and end of a story. As you become better readers, we know most stories actually have a detailed plot (story).

We can recount this story using a Plot Mountain graphic organizer. So today here are your steps:

1. Watch Ms. Robey’s Screencast of Building Action in Dramas (Play)
2. Review the Google Slide Presentation (make sure to check out the Scratch Garden Video at the beginning)
3. Complete the Story Mountain Organizer using your own book at home (You can find an electronic copy in the Google Slide Presentation on slide 9, or you can print the PDF below if you would rather do it that way)

Keep Up the Great Work Readers!

It wouldn’t be spring in Michigan unless there was some snow, right?! Happy Spring Snow, and just think you got a snow day for this (attempt at bad humor here).

Listed below is the answers to Module 4, Lesson 2’s math work. I just realized that I never posted these on Friday, so please excuse the delay!

Remember you do not need to submit your math work, but instead I would like for you to hold onto it until we get back to school. If you would rather take a picture of the assignments and send them to me for feedback you may as well (but it is not necessary).

As always, if you get stuck or need additional assistance please reach out to me via email or Remind. I am here for you!

Week at a Glance for the Week of 3/22

Just think you made it through our first week of remote learning! YAY!!! A big thank you to all of those parents who were flexible, understanding, kind, and had willingness to try something new last week. We are all in this together, and I can’t tell you how lucky I am to have such a great parental unit behind me!

Along with the big thank you, I wanted to also give a shout out to those parents who took the family survey. I was able to get some great feedback and I will be working to incorporate that more into our future lessons.

In response to the survey, I noticed some parents wanted a more clear plan for the week. Listed below you will find a more detailed week at a glance with the names of the assignments, when they will be posted, and where they will be posted.

Since this situation is fluid, there may be changes with this plan later in the week depending on feedback I am getting from families and staff. If something changes with this, I will let you know.

Another item of feedback that I was asked about was assignment submission. If for some reason you are struggling to submit an assignment into Google Classroom, please reach out to me. I would be more than welcome to give you a phone call and walk you through the process. If you need some extra guidance, please check out the YouTube video below.

If for some reason you still can’t upload an assignment, feel free to take a picture and send it to me via Remind or email. Or you can scan it and email it as an attachment too. Ultimately, when in doubt reach out! I’ll walk you through it!

Along with the week at a glance, this week as a school we will be doing a Remote Learning Spirit Week. Please see the attachment below regarding the days. I also incorporated them within the week at a glance above!

Lastly, today I have posted the weekly writing prompt and weekly reading log into Google Classroom. Make sure to check those out this week.

Let’s try and make this week great! We can do it!

Parent Survey

Parents,

In order to better serve you and your students, the third grade team came up with the survey below. Please take a moment and fill it out, that way we can get some feedback regarding this Remote Learning.

Please remember that we are all new to this, and that we all are trying the best we can. So please remember to use kind words!

Thank you!

Zoom Call and Fun Activities!

Hey Room 212!

Thank you to all of those students who called into Zoom at 11:00am to participate in our Virtual Chat. I loved seeing all of your faces, your siblings, parents, and even pets!!! We will be doing another chat next week so make sure to stay tuned!

Now in our chat, we were talking about ways to “Sharpen your Saw” when you are at home. Here are some of my favorite things to do right now:

  1. Learn to draw Disney Characters- Visit the Disney site below to see how to draw some of your favorite characters like Mickey Mouse, Baymax, Stitch, Goofy, and many others!

6. This is my personal favorite!!!! Make sure to check them out- Take a Home Safari with the Cincinnati Zoo. Every weekday at 3 p.m. ET. they will post a new episode. Each episode will feature a different animal and an accompanying educational kids activity that can be done from home.

Friday Update!

Hey Everyone!

So today, I thought I would give everyone some extra time to get caught up on this week’s assignments. Therefore there will be no new learning today. If you are feeling like you want to continue working, just work on those lead measures (Zearn, Epic!, Khan, etc).

Just a friendly reminder on a couple of things happening today. If you still need a laptop and you haven’t communicated it with me, please text me through Remind. Mrs. Tiba will be passing out laptops at 11:00am at Lindbergh to only those students who have reserved one ahead of time.

In addition at 11:00am, we will also be having a Zoom class chat! Please make sure to sign on a little early, since you will need to set up a free account before our chat. The invitation information is listed below:

Need a Chromebook?

Tomorrow at 11:00am Mrs. Tiba will be present at the school to pass out Chromebooks to students who need them. You must let me know ahead of time though if you are wanting a Chromebook, since this will not be a drive thru like yesterday but almost like a take out for Chromebooks.

If you need a Chromebook for your child please let me know by 5pm today if you would like for me to reserve it.

Thank you so much!

Thursday Check-In 3/19

Just a little Frozen 2 Disney Humor for you!

Good morning families!

I just wanted to check in today.

My goal is that all assignments should be attempted to be turned in through Google Classroom by Sunday, March 22nd. This will help us start next week off fresh. If you have math just hold on to & turn in when we return to school!

Update on the assignments for the week thus far!!

  1. ELA- Google Classroom assignments- Visualizing graphic organizer (Day 1) and Idioms worksheet (Day 2/send Ms. Robey a picture of worksheet). Weekly ELA- Reading Log and weekly writing prompt.
  2. Math-Lesson 1 & 2- Homework, & application problems, 4 lessons of Zearn.
  3. Science- Mystery #1- Where can you find whales in the desert?
  4. Packet- Some of you have a packet. Please work on this at your own pace. It was made before we received the directive from Ms. Tiba on what platform to teach while at home. This packet is a great review and is optional.
  5. LIM- Self care-Remember to Sharpen your Saw! Take care of yourself and your family. Keep moving! Stay active.

Tomorrow, I’m going to attempt a virtual chat with students using an app called Zoom! That way we can just talk to each other and visit! If you are interested I’m thinking of having this meeting at 11:00am tomorrow. Let me know if you are interested using the Remind app. All you have to do is download the ZOOM Cloud Meeting app. Listed below is the invitation to join our virtual meeting.

Social and Emotional Support Hotline

If you feel like your student or family is struggling with coping with COVID-19 issues such as, anxiety, fear, and stress and you would like to speak to someone about it, Dearborn Public Schools has setup a help hotline. Listed below you will find a hotline that is run by the school social workers, psychologists, and and counselors in our district. They are readily available to provide assistance regarding these trying times. Feel free to use if you need to. We all could use a little help every now and again.
