Math Homework for 01/29

Good Evening Parents,

Today your child practiced representing the unknown in a multiplication or division sentence with a letter. This was somewhat challenging for some students.

Your child was expected to complete Module 3, Lesson 3 homework. Questions 1-3a.

Please review this concept with your child using the video below:

Weekly Update for the Week of 01/27

Happy Monday Everyone! Today was such an amazing Monday. We had the pleasure of attending the Native American Experience at our school. At today’s in-school field trip we were able to hear more historical information about the 3 Fires Tribes in Michigan and look at artifacts and replicas from the time period. Our experience ended with us being able to go around and touch items and even try things on. I was able to take some pictures and I will be posting some of them after this post. So stay tuned !

Along with the awesome field trip, your child brought home their report card today for the second card-marking. Please sign and return the envelope tomorrow. As always if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and we can set up an appointment to go over any thoughts that you have.

This week we will be wrapping up our mid-year assessments. Please check your child’s planner for their updated NWEA score. At the back of the planner, you will see a chart that documents their expected RIT score and then the score they were able to achieve.

Remember to make sure to encourage your child to take their time and do their best. This little extra motivation goes a long way. Take the time to celebrate their successes!

Last week your child begun their multiplication timed tests. These tests are completed twice a week (all days beginning with the letter T) and will help students practice their math fluency. Based upon common core, 3rd grade students are expected to know their multiplication facts from 0-9 by the end of the year. This is critical for math success in upper elementary.

In order to make sure all students are ready, every week your child will complete a multiplication fact test at their level. Students will start at their 0s and 1s times tables, and gradually work up to their 12s times tables. After students have passed their test, they will receive a flash card set for the next level that they are working towards. If you ever have any questions about this process please let me know!

On Friday, we will also be having a Michigan birthday party for our great state. Please see the post from earlier today regarding this information.

Reading- Using informational text to discover how living things adapt to change. Practicing identifying nonfiction text features and discussing how they contribute to the text. Analyzing text structure and determining how compare and contrast structure can help a reader understand a topic deeper. Applying possessive nouns within writing.

Writing- Publishing their narrative fable. Introducing text-dependent writing with informational text. Students will be exposed to a writing prompt that requires them to cite evidence using an informational article. Students will work with the teacher to model how to correctly respond to the writing prompt.

Spelling- r-controlled words: arctic, born, carnivores, forest, form, forward, sharks, and sharp.

Math- Developing our 6-9 times tables using a variety of strategies: five strategy (using your 5 facts and adding the next number), number bonds, tape diagrams, and finding the unknown within a multiplication/division problem.

Science- This week in science we will explore the mystery, “How can you predict when it’s going to storm?” We will learn about differences between fair weather clouds and storm clouds, and the role of wind direction in determining whether a rain cloud will pass overhead. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by looking at clouds together and asking, “What kind of clouds do you think those are? I wonder if it will rain…” Ask your child if they’d like to show you their Storm Spotter’s Guide, a small book they made to help them remember how to use the clouds to predict the weather.

Social Studies- Reviewing the early history of Michigan by completing a history timeline.

Module 2 Math Assessment

Good Evening Parents!

Last Friday, I passed back to your child their Module 2 End-of-Module Assessment. While grading our tests, I noticed some students need some additional support with telling time (especially when it is past 45 mins.) and subtraction with borrowing. Please make sure to review over with your child these math concepts.

If you noticed your child’s score was labeled below or approaching, and you would like your child to retake the assessment feel free to reach out to me as well. I always allow students to retake assessments before or after school if they would like a chance to better their grade.

Lastly, while grading I use the Eureka Math module assessment rubric. I have included that PDF here for you to review. Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Michigan’s Birthday Party!

Outline of the state of Michigan, with a picture of balloons by the thumb region.

On Friday, January 31st we will be celebrating Michigan’s 183rd birthday! Since Michigan of the cereal capital in the world, we will be taking time to celebrate its birthday with a Michigan Made breakfast feast.

Students are encouraged to bring a Michigan Made breakfast item. Items could include Jiffy Mix blueberry muffins, fruit from Michigan, Kellogg cereals, and even Post cereals. Feel free to get creative too! If your child would like to bring an item to share with the class please see the SignUp Genius below:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c4fa8ad28a4f49-michigan1

I will be providing bowls, napkins, and some basic cereals that are from Michigan to help out with the class. However the more the merrier!

I thought this would be a nice treat to celebrate not only Michigan, but also to celebrate being done with our mid-year assessments.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Thank you!

Weekly Update for the Week of 01/21

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you all had a restful and reflective weekend. I know it was a well-deserved break for many of us.

This week you will be receiving an update on your child’s progress. I’m proud to announce that we are officially all done with DRA testing. We will be sending home their updated score later this week.

In addition, your child did bring home their social studies test today. Please sign the score sheet and return this tomorrow.

If at anytime you have questions regarding your child’s score, feel free to reach out to me. I would be more then happy to discuss with you, your child’s progress.

Lastly, we will begin our NWEA testing this week. At the bottom of this post you will see the NWEA schedule for our class. Remember to say positive affirmations to your child days of the test, get a good night’s rest, and eat a healthy breakfast before coming to school. These little tips will help make sure your child is ready to put their best foot forward.

This week in class…

Reading- We will begin Unit 3 of our reading program, “Animal Adaptations.” In this unit of study, we’ll be learning what many different animals do in order to survive. Some animals have special features, like sharp teeth, feathers, or webbed feet, that help them; others behave in a way that gives them an advantage. Some use camouflage to blend into their surroundings and others, like the iguana, can puff themselves to look bigger and scare away predators in the process. We’ll be reading informational science texts, studying illustrations, and looking at graphs and diagrams. Along the way, we’ll meet animals like the red-eyed tree frog, hawk, Arctic fox and many, many others.

Writing- Discussing quotation marks in dialogue, publishing fables, and revising and editing paragraphs.

Math- Beginning Module 3 for math. We will be discovering multiplication and division using units of 0, 1, 6-9, and multiples of 10. In addition, we will be starting our timed tests on Thursday starting with our units of 0-1.

Science- This week in science we will explore the mystery, “Where do clouds come from?” Your child will observe important clues, such as the fact that water changes from a liquid to a gas (even without boiling!). You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by pointing out water vapor whenever you see it rising off hot water in the kitchen or bath, or pointing out tiny droplets of water forming on a mirror, windows, or glasses. Engage their minds by asking, “Wow, why do you think this is happening?”
