Testing and Social Studies Test

Good Evening Fabulous Parents,

The school year is quickly winding down and that means that all testing is coming to an end. HOORAY!  I’m beyond happy to highlight how well our class has done on their NWEA. On average, our 75-80 percent of our class had met their NWEA RIT goal by the end of the year in every subject area. This is quite the accomplishment!

Please remember to take time to celebrate your child’s hard work this year. I know our class will be celebrating our accomplishments at our Multiplication Race Sundae Party (06/13) and our end-of-the-year award celebration on the last day of school.

To wrap up testing we are just finishing up DRAs, Timed Tests, and our last social studies test on government. Listed below is the link to our Social Studies Test. The test will be next Friday. If your child will not be present this day, please let me know ahead of time so that we can do his/her test earlier.

Next Friday will also be our last day for our timed test. We will be taking time tests next week on Thursday and Friday since it is a short week. Remember that the goal for every student is to pass their nines timed test. If there is anything else that I can do to support you please let me know.

Mystery Science Homework for Today and Study Guide for Quiz

Good Afternoon Parents,

Today in class we we solved the mystery, ‘Why do plants grow fruit?’ We saw how fruit is a tasty container for seeds, and how all fruits are simply one part of a flower (the ovary).

You can help support this week’s learning by involving your child when cutting vegetables or fruits. Ask them, “What should I look for, to know if what I’m cutting was once part of the flower?” (Answer: Look for seeds!)

If your child missed out on our science activity, please make them watch the Mystery Science video below. This will help them with their upcoming science quiz.

Mystery Science 2: Why do plants give us fruit?

In addition, we will be taking a short quiz next week when we get back regarding all of our discoveries on plants. Listed below you will find the study guide:

Weekly Update for the Week of 05/20

Good Evening Parents,

This week we are continuing our final units of study within third grade. Please remember to take the time to following along our blog. I will be making sure to post updates on what’s going on within the classroom and keep you posted on all of our upcoming events.

Since this week is a short week we will not be having a reading log or spelling this week. Even though we do not have spelling or a reading log, you want to make sure to keep reading with your child. We are currently working on our DRA reading assessments, and by practicing with your child you are able to help them achieve some of their lead measures for their W.I.G.s.

During this week, we will also be taking our last two NWEA assessments. On testing days please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest, has breakfast, and plenty of encouraging words. By doing this, I know our students can meet their academic W.I.G.S.

Listed below are some of the items we are working on.

Reading- Figurative language (hyperbole, homonyms, idioms, etc.) and discussing context clues for vocabulary words

Writing- Personal Essays. Reviewing a big idea within a writing piece and coming up with personal ways students can relate to a big idea.

Math- Wrapping up our organizing and displaying data module, Module 6 Test on Wednesday, and beginning our Module 7: Geometry unit.

Classwork for Today

Good Afternoon Parents,

Today we had many students out for the choir field trip and I just wanted to keep you posted on what was taught today and provide some extra help on homework.

For science today we wrapped up our Mystery Science 1 on the Power of Plants. Listed below is the Mystery Science we completed. If your child missed out on the concept, please make sure to have them watch the video.

Mystery Science 1: Why do plants grow flowers?

In addition, for math we practiced organizing measurement data in a line plot. For today’s homework your child is expected to complete Module 6,  Lesson 8 pg. 161-163 (all of the problems). If your child was at choir today it is very important to have them watch the math video listed below.

Lastly, during our Literacy CAFE time we learned about hyperbole. A Hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration. Listed below you will find a song that teaches students about what a hyperbole is as well a PowerPoint that gives the definition with examples.

Good Afternoon Fabulous Parents,

Today your child will bring home their Module Five End-of-Module Assessment and their Economics Social Studies Test. Overall, our class did pretty well on both of these assessments. However if you feel like your child would like a retake on either test and they scored below an 80% (3 or 4 number score), please reach out to me.

Listed below you will find the rubric that was used to grade your child’s math assessment and the answer key as well. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me.

Science Quiz

Good Evening Parents,

It was brought to my attention that some parents were expressing concerns with their child’s previous science quiz score that was brought home yesterday. I just wanted to take a quick second to ease some worries and concerns by clarifying a couple of items.

The first item is that I wanted to remind you was that this score was put into grade book as a quiz. Therefore this score will not be weighted as heavily as an end of unit assessment. The weight is very similar to a homework or formative assignment given in class. This is also being tied to the first portion of this unit which was given back in April. So this grade will be an accumulation of the first Animals Through Time Unit and the second half of the Animals Through Time Unit (which wrapped up April 29th).

The second item is that I always offer retakes on quizzes and tests in my class. I will be giving a retake of the science quiz next Wednesday at 8 a.m. in our classroom. If this is something you are interested in, please just let me know so I can make sure that I have a retake prepared for your child.

Lastly, I just wanted to let you know if you are unsure about what the question or answer was looking for when you are reviewing it with your child please see the Animals Through Time Part Two Study Guide. This study guide has the correct answers listed out for the quiz. You can find this under our Unit Four Tab. If you still have questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

My ultimate goal is to provide a quality education for all my students where they feel like they are learning. Mistakes are always used as a learning tool to help us grow (both students and the teacher). As a teacher, my next step is always analyzing student quiz/test results and planning my instruction around concepts that some students didn’t fully understand. Hopefully over the next couple of days we can fix any of those misconceptions that students had regarding this unit and help them achieve their best science self.

I appreciate all of the hard work that you parents do over the course of the year, and I truly understand how hard the end of the school year is with all of the testing going on. As a grade-level team, we try our best to spread out classroom assessments, district assessments, and state assessments. However around this time of year they tend to overlap quite a bit. If you ever have any concerns regarding an assessment or anything within the classroom, please never hesitate to reach out to me. I’m always willing to take feedback or concerns.

Thank you so much for always being so understanding and supportive.  I truly appreciate everything that you do for your child and Lindbergh Elementary.
