Nightly Reading

Often when parents think of evening reading we think it has to be the child reading out loud. Remember they like to hear you read too! Read to THEM, talk about the story or text, let them know what stories you liked when you were their age!

Parent Talk!

Parent talk is a great program being offered to Nowlin Parents!  There has been one class already, but it isn’t too late to join in the learning.  The idea behind parent talk is to provide parents tools to communicate with their children in a positive way.

The remain sessions will be held at OL Smith starting October 24, 2017

Parent Talk evening classes 6:00-7:30 pm.

Remaining classes will meet:

October 31.
November 14, 2, 28.
December 5, 12.
Graduation: December 19th
Another bonus…. teachers at Nowlin School are learning “Teacher Talk”.  The benefit is we will ALL be speaking to your children in a similar way.  This will help them understand expectations and that parents and teachers are working together!

Reading comprehension take 2!

This was from my last post on reading comprehension.  I am moving it here so it will go along with the continued information I plan to post regarding comprehension strategies you can use at home.

Determining importance= I understand the main ideas of the text and the author’s message.

  • What it sounds like…
  • The text was mostly about…
  • The author is trying to tell us that…*
  • I learned…
  • The important details were…*

Most of our reading at home tends to be narrative.  The two I put a * next to are great follow up statements to talk through with your child.  They may have a hard time with this at first.  You can model it for them!

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is an important part of reading.  We want our children to be readers not “word callers”!  Over the next few school days I will be including things you can talk with your child about during reading to help expand their comprehension beyond the “who” and “what” the story is about.

Making Connections= I use what I know to understand what I read.

What it sounds like…

  • It reminds me of when I read… because…
  • It reminds me of a time I… because…
  • It reminds me of something I heard about because…

This comprehension technique helps the reader have a deeper understanding about the characters or ideas they read because they have related it to a life experience, be it something else they read of something they have first hand knowledge about.

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading
