An 8th grade Math lesson.  Students will collect data about different cell phones companies to compare rate of change and y-intercept to decide which one is the cheapest phone plan. Then they will graph the different companies plan to see graphically which plan is better.

7th Grade Ancient World History

A 7th grade Ancient World History project.  Students will work as a group to research and write a children’s book that explains what factors are needed for civilization to be considered an empire.  (What is needed to sustain an empire?) They will each take a role in the the research by breaking down the topic into its individual parts. Once they have completed the research, the students will create an illustrated children’s book.

An 8th grade force and motion project.   In this project, you will use Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion to design a vehicle. This vehicle must travel forward (reaction) 1.5 meters by pushing backwards on the floor, the air, or some other object (action).
At the end of this project, you will demonstrate your vehicle’s motion. You will explain how the vehicle’s motion demonstrates Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion. You will also include evidence of Newton’s 1st Law.

Students act as global citizens to identify global issues. Groups select a global issue they find most pressing/relevant/important and create a proposal to administration and student council for Smith to raise money to address this issue. This proposal should include a detailed analysis of the issue, explaining where it originated and how its effects are global. They will also create a plan for informing students and raising awareness within Smith.

Water Systems: Ancient Civilizations and Today

7th Grade Social Studies

Students will be applying their knowledge that they have learned throughout the year to the current water crisis affecting our community in Metro Detroit. They will be researching the current water crisis and creating a campaign based on the water systems and environmental tactics used in Ancient Civilizations such as drainage, aqueducts, irrigation systems, canals, and other water supply systems.
