Week of December 18th
One more week until winter break!!!! After this week, we will be entering 2018!!! Wow! This year is flying!!!
This week in kindergarten:
Reading: The gingerbread man; The gingerbread baby; The gingerbread boy; The gingerbread girl.
Strategy focus:
- Retell story using transitions: first, next, last
- Compare text read aloud
Sight words: run, find (review all- test this week)
Letter knowledge: Short vowels a,e,i,o,u
Writing: Informational writing- we will be researching about Reindeer. We will write about what they are, what they have and what they can do. We will create a reindeer book to share by Friday.
Math: We will be reviewing graphing. We will explore story problems. The students will listen to a story problem. They will draw a picture. They will decide whether it is a addition or subtraction problem. They will complete a number sentence to match. The students will write the final answer. We will also fill in missing numbers as well. This will be coming home daily this week. So please follow up with your child!!
Science: We will continue to graph the weather on our December weather graph.
Social Studies: Timelines of our lives. Your child will be receiving winter packet Tuesday. One section discusses creating a timeline of your child’s life with your family. Instructions are included. Please send back on Monday, January 8th.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
- Winter break packet attached: winter break packet hard copy coming home this Tuesday- There is more to it in the hard copy. It is due on Monday, January 8th.
- STAND kids will be selling personalized Santa hats on Thursday for $2. Each child may only purchase one hat. Proceeds will be used to purchase fleece to make blankets for shelter animals.
- Late Start On Wednesday, December 20
- Winter break begins Saturday, December 23- Sunday, January 7th. School will resume Monday, January 8th.

Week of December 11th
Can you believe it? Ten more days and then Winter break begins! We will be wrapping up our unit about transportation. This week in kindergarten we will:
Reading: A duck on a bike; How do I get to school?; The Singing Wagon; The two frogs
Strategies:
- Retelling a story in sequence (order of the story) key vocabulary: first, next, last
- Expanding on a topic (Always what else can you ad about what you heard/know? Any other details?)
- Beginning, middle, end sounds of 3 letter words (cvc words-consonant vowel consonant: pig, dog, cat, man, pot, pen etc.)
- Blending cvc words: c-a-t >>> cat
- Segmenting cvc words: cat>>> c-a-t
- Practice short vowels: a,e,i,o,u
- Practice recognizing and producing rhymes

Sight words: play, ride
Writing: We are revisiting narrative writing using transitions: First, Next, Last. We will focus on if you ride a bike where would you go? The sentence stems will be: First, I ride my bike. Next, I will ___. Last, I will ___.
Math: We will focus on a couple of concepts this week. We will review addition problems of adding one. We will practice writing the number sentence horizontally and vertically. We will practice counting backwards and explore subtraction by 1. We write number sentences that match horizontally and vertically. We will also solve story problems as they will be presented in the NWEA coming in January as practice. I will model how to answer a story problem using paper and pencil. We will also review surveys and graphs. We will create graphs based on favorite cookies, favorite specials to attend. we will build graphs based on amount of certain things we find in a picture. We will also analyze and interpret graphs. Questions your child may encounter will be: Which has the most __? Which has the least? Which is fewer or greater? How do you know? When your child brings home the graphs, please ask these questions.
Examples of horizontal number sentences:

Social Studies: We will discuss how to trade/exchange. We will discuss the barter system. A barter system is a trade an item for an another item. We will also discuss how money is used as a trade for a good or service. We will model and role play trade. You could practice role playing with your child at home. pretend you work at a restaurant. Your child is the customer etc..

Week of December 4th
We will continue our unit of Transportation. This week we will discuss places we can travel to.
Reading: On the go; Poems: Subway Train; Monster Trucks;
Strategies:
- Students will recall information about vehicles from the story and categorize it.
- Students will recognize and produce rhymes
- Blending words: c-a-t => cat
- Segmenting words: cat=> c-a-t
- Practice beginning blends: sh- (sheep, ship, shop); ch- (chip, chop, chin); th- (three, thumb, thick)
Sight words: my, away
Letters: Vv, Yy
Writing: We will write a narrative. Our question is if you would like to go anywhere, where would you go and how would you get there? Our sentence stems will be: We can ride on my __. We can go to ___.
Our title will be: Away we go!
An example will include: We can go to the moon.We can on my rocket. It goes in the air.
Students will learn how to revise and edit their writing by following a class created writing checklist. This rubric will change as your child learns more skills from lessons about writing.
To be star writers, your child should always check for:
- Does your writing have an illustration?
- Did you spell your sight words correctly?
- Do you have space between your words?
- Can you read your writing? Does it make sense?
- Can your friend read your writing?
As we learn more ideas about writing this student checklist will change. So when your write with your child, go through the above checklist.
Math: We are learning more about doubles. Practice: 1+1=2, 2+2=4, 3+3=6 etc. We will continue practicing tally marks. We will continue to make a graph and look for patterns. We will construct a bike graph. We will also analyze and interpret data on a graph. We will answer questions such as
- What do you notice?
- What pattern do you see?
- Which has the most?
- Which has the least or fewest?
Science: We will continue to graph the weather for the month of December.
Social Studies: We will learn what a good and service is. Goods are items people produce and sell. Service is a type of work a person can provide. Examples include:
- Goods: food (pizza, ice cream, candy etc ); clothes (jackets, pants, shirt, dress, shoes, etc); appliances (stove,fridge, blender etc); cars, toys etc
- Services: hair dresser-cuts hair, waiter- serves food, teacher-teaches, librarian-checks out books, doctor-checks for sicknesses, pharmacist- provides medicine, lunch lady-serves lunch
