SHHHHH! Keep the next part a secret from the students, for now 🙂

On October 28th, I will be having a Fall Festival in the classroom.  I really would like to keep this a surprise for my class, at least until the week of.   We will be creating toilet paper pumpkins, pumpkin towers, paper plate spider webs, clothespin button bats, and puffy ghosts!  This day, please send in candy with your child to pass out to their classmates.  I will need a few volunteers!  If you would like to volunteer, please send me an email.  I will accept the first 5 people to send me an email.   If you are not one of the first five, I will keep your name for the holiday fun in December.

Weekly News!

Hello Families!

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful fall weekend!

Daily Check-In:

Last week was the first week of our Daily Check-Ins.  It was a wonderful tool for school-home communication, but also allowed for student reflection each day.  Please, send the Daily Check-In back to school each day.  Also, each Friday I will send home the Daily Check-In, please send it back to school on Monday.  Thank you!

Assessment:

I give quick quizzes each Friday to check that students are able to apply the skills that we are learning during the week.  These quizzes, along with all assessments that I give, drive my instruction.  If I see that a few students are not understanding a specific concept, I will reteach in a small group.  If I see that the whole class is struggling with a concept, I will reteach the concept to the whole class.

This is the case for this past week.  I gave a quick check (quiz) in both Math (measuring with centimeters) and Reading (Main Idea).  Both these quick checks showed me that I need to go back, reteach, and allow for students to practice longer.

I will always guide my instruction by what is best for my students.  This sometimes means slowing down, and practicing more.

What we are learning this week:

  • In Math, we will review using centimeter cubes for measuring real objects, along with using a ruler.  We will also start learning about the difference between a meter and centimeter.
  • In Reading, we will be reviewing how to identify the main topic/ idea of a passage and within different paragraphs.  We will also discuss and review how key details prove and support the main idea of a passage/ paragraph.
  • In Writing, we begin writing our informational piece on different habitats.  The final draft will be due the last week of October.  This will be a very guided process.  I will be sending home a writing rubric with your child by the end of the week so that you are aware of how I will be grading their writing.
  • In Social Studies, we will be learning about communities and why families live in communities.

Hello Families!

Please read the message from Ms. Hmayed below:

“Hello Parents!

This is Ms. Hmayed, your childs’ Art Teacher. I’m reaching out to inform you that I will be starting an Art Club this year for 2nd, and 3rd grade students! I’m very excited to give these students an extra opportunity to make Art with me. We will be exploring and creating with their choice of Art Materials. I want to allow students to develop their creativity, strengthen their choice making, and problem solving skills.

Art Club will begin on October 20th, 2022 at 4:00pm and end promptly for parent pickup at 6:00pm. Art Club will be held once a week on Thursday’s from 4-6pm. There is an application and permission slip that has been sent home with your children. Please be sure to submit these ASAP.

Due to a limited amount of seats available, students will be chosen to join Art Club based on their written, and drawing submissions (this is included in the small packet that has been sent home today). I’ve also included a copy of the Application and Permission slip in this email.

Please contact me if you have any questions at all!

Thank you!

-Ms. Hmayed”

Daily Check-In

Good Morning Families,

Yesterday I sent home the first Daily Check-In.  This type of home communication is to keep you informed about your child’s day.  The Daily Check-In is between you, your child, and myself.  It is not discussed in class.  The Daily check-In can be used as a tool to promote conversation and reflection with your child about his/her day.

No one is perfect.  Some days your child might have a green day, red day, or yellow day.  This does not define your child though.  If there is a serious problem, it will not be stated on the Daily Check-In.  I will contact you so that we can discuss the matter.

The Daily Check-In also holds me and your child accountable.  It ensures that I am using multiple ways to redirect your child throughout the day, but it also provides them with the chance to correct and start over.   The Daily Check-In holds your child responsible for his/her actions.

Creating a community within my classroom and with each family is extremely important to me.  We are all in this together.  The more we support each other and communicate, the more successful each child will be.

Thank you!

End of the Week News

Hello Families!

In your child’s Daily Folder was next week’s “This Week’s Focus.”  There you will find your child’s Spelling and High Frequency Words.

I also sent work with the students today.  This is some of the work that we completed this week.  Some of the work was completed together as a class, while some was supposed to be completed independently.  Students do not need to hand in incomplete work this week, but moving forward, your child will need to complete the work that they did not get done in school at home and bring it back.  If your child does have a lot of incomplete work, please have a discussion with them about using their time wisely when working independently.  Most of the work that they are completing during independent time are skills that we have gone over multiple times before I have them do it by themselves.

I will be sending home the Math, Spelling, and Reading Skills test Monday.  For your child’s Math Test, I ask that you sign it and return it back to school.  If you would like a copy of your child’s test, I will send one home after it is returned.  Spelling and Reading Skill Tests may stay home.  I will only ask that you ever return Unit or Module Assessments back to me.

I will give parent access to Raz-Kids by Monday.

On Monday, your child will bring home a calendar and Reading Log for October.

If you have not already please subscribe to the school blog as well. Mrs. Fournier posts important information on her blog as well. On the right side of our schools homepage it says sign up for e-news. If you input your email address and click submit it will email to you just like mine does.
