Home School Day 1

Greetings families. I hope you all are staying healthy. I am impressed with your efforts to help your children navigate online learning this morning. I know this is new for all of us and I will try my best to support you.

A few tips or questions I have had:

  • The links on my blog are in blue. For the Scholastic one it will take you to the site and there are 3 engaging articles to read and answer questions. My own boys enjoyed the articles for today and we had some great conversations. Students have the option to read or have it read to them (perfect for when you are making lunch!) then they must log into our Google Classroom to access the Google doc in which they respond. Please do not submit until all of this weeks responses are done (Friday).
  • Read Works assignment are suggested for one a day. I noticed some of my students did more (this is fine with me) just be careful to take your time. I will need to reassign to students with low scores.
  • Opinion paper is due on Sunday. Students are expected to write a 5 paragraph opinion essay. After they have completed a rough draft (I would suggest they do this part on paper) they will type into the document on Google Classroom.
  • Math—if you did not pick up your homework book on Friday then you will have the option to print from this “old” teachers manual I found online. Please be careful to select the pages that correspond to the lesson assigned (previous post) so that you do not accidentally print all 300+ pages. Math homework pages

Some words of advice: Take the time to enjoy the great learners that your children are. Take a PE, music, and art break. Watch educational videos on Netflix (Mine love the “Who Was Show” as it shows 2 famous people from each episode like Queen Elizabeth, Picasso, the Wright Brothers and so many more!)

Feel free to reach out via e-mail or the remind app.

Peek at our Virtual Week :)

Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope each and everyone of you are doing well as we navigate through this unfamiliar time. These next few weeks away from the classroom may feel a little strange, but I am hopeful that with the extra precautions put into place we will be back in school happy and healthy come April. In the meantime, I would like to extend my hand in helping provide a regular learning routine in your home. I will post each Sunday or Monday a suggested list of assignments to ensure your child is continuing to grow academically. Students will do a majority of their work on Google Classroom (please refer to my previous post for a how to list).

Please keep reading for the suggested list of assignments for the week of 3-16-2020:

(Be sure to SUBMIT all assignments when completed on Google Classroom so I can see them.)

Reading:

  • Scholastic News Learn at home lessons for 20 days. Read the non-fiction articles for days 1-5 and complete the assignments that follow. They have some great articles on here guys! You will love learning about the hottest and coldest places on Earth, an awesome domino designer, and a cool new invention to pick up trash!
    • Be sure to type your responses into the sheet labeled Scholastic News Work.
    • Some questions ask you to draw or design something so please skip those and practice them on paper at home.
  • Readworks articles will be shared through Google Classroom. Please plan to do 1 article and question set a day. Remember you can use the tools to highlight, take notes, and zoom in. Please remember to split the screen so you can use your good reading skills to GO BACK in the text to find your answer. Here are the titles of the articles.
    • Gasping for Air
    • The High Dive
    • Out West
    • Trouble in the Amazon
    • Happy Trails
  • Read a book of your choice and write about it. Write a summary, ask questions, make inferences, create a new ending…..just read for enjoyment and keep that reading stamina up 🙂

Writing:

  • Prompt of the Week- Is it better for students to learn online or at school?
  • Print and fill out the blueprint answering the prompt. If you don’t have a printer available, simply duplicate it on regular notebook paper.
  • Type your paper in your Google Classroom titled Opinion Paper. This paper will be due on Sunday, March 22nd. I look forward to hearing what you think as your first week of homeschool. Remember, everything is saved on the google form so it is okay to work on it a little bit each day.
  • Use the checklist to make sure you included everything.

Math

  • Watch video for lessons 11,12,13,14,and 15 Unit 5 Video Tutorials. One lesson video per day.
  • After watching each day’s lesson video on the link above, complete the matching lesson on Zearn. One lesson per day.
  • Once finished with Zearn lesson, complete the matching lesson homework in the Succeed Math Book.
  • Remember you are at home, so take some time out and play some FUN math games to ensure your stay on top of your multiplication fluency.

Science

  • Mystery Science– How do germs get inside your body? Watch the video. Use some of this information in your opinion writing assignment for an extra bonus point.

Social Studies

  • Watch this video on how KIDS become entrepreneurs
  • What is an entrepreneur?
  • Challenge yourself to think of a cool business idea. What can you make that solves a problem?

Please let me know how I can help you. Have a great week working in your PJ’s. Alex and Austen will be doing the same things as you all. I will miss you all:)

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a place where your child is linked to special classroom assignments.

All Google apps like Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Slides, etc. can be accessed through your child’s school account. Make sure you are signed out of YOUR account before you try to access a google classroom. You will not be able to enter the classroom from your account. Your child signs in to Google with his/her school id and password independently at school and can do this at home, too. Sign in information is in his/her planner.

Here is the link to Google Classroom. This can also be accessed through CLEVER on the Dearborn home page under student.

Clever is a hub that is located in our Dearborn Schools main website.

This allows children to access many applications commonly used by students throughout the district. You can always go to Clever to find most of the apps we use. However, you can also use my blog.

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families! What a beautiful sunny Sunday, spring is near!

Reminders for the week:

  • Library check out tomorrow
  • Tuesday BINGO for books @5:30
  • Friday 1/2 day
  • Read-a-thon permission slips due Friday

Last week we started a reading challenge in the classroom. Students were asked to create teams and set goals for how many books they intend to read for the month of March. Based on the books they read they will earn “loops” to add to their teams reading paper chain. Teams will check in periodically during the week to chat with group members about their books, their progress, and new found vocabulary from their books. Reading at home counts for the challenge as well, so please encourage your child to help out their team and read, read, read!

This week in reading we will continue to work on inferencing but with a switch in focus to non-fiction text. We will also be researching an animal from the rain forest and writing a summary about them to tie into our March is reading month theme. In writing we will continue to work on our rain forest paper.

In math we will continue to work on fractions with the focus on comparing fractions through pictures, fraction bars, and our number sense.

In social studies we will work on our final lesson of push and pull factors that affected migration to Michigan.

Academic Words:

  1. Number Bond- a picture that shows part-part-whole.
  2. Entrepreneur- someone who combines human, natural, and capital resources to produce goods and services.
  3. Improper Fraction- a fraction that is larger than one with the top number (numerator)being larger then the bottom number(denominator).
  4. Selection-the process of selecting favorable traits of animals so they gradually change over time.

Looking forward to a great week ahead 🙂

PE Club Note

Dear Haigh students and families,
Thank you everyone that applied for student participation in our Haigh PE Club. The amount of interest in club has been incredible! Unfortunately, we were only able to select 25 students in grades K-2 and 25 students from grades 3-5. All students that were selected for this club have been notified. On Friday, students that were selected for this club were given acceptance notes. If your child was not one of those selected, don’t worry! Any students not selected have been added to a waiting list and will be contacted as spaces become available.
Thank you again for all of your support,
Mrs. LozonPE Club Teacher

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families. Hopefully you are enjoying the weekend. We had a busy, winning hockey weekend over here. Both of my boys teams won against their rival teams on Saturday! We are enjoying a quiet day at home today on this first day of MARCH!

Reminders for the week:

  • March is reading month assembly Monday morning. Please be sure to check your child’s owl folder for their March is reading log packet that includes a calendar of events, reading log, and permission slip to this months read-a-thon 🙂
  • Library check-out Monday am
  • Spelling test from last week is tomorrow due to snow days
  • February reading logs are due tomorrow
  • Please send in an EXTRA pair of shoes with your child. The playground is saturated with water and making shoes extra muddy! We just got a brand new rug in our classroom and I would love to keep it clean 🙂

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Unit fraction- a fraction where the top number is 1.
  2. Numerator- the top number in a fraction and tells the part that is shaded in a fraction.
  3. Denominator- the bottom number in a fraction and tells the total amount in the whole.
  4. Classification- organizing plants and animals into different categories based on their characteristics.

This week in reading we will continue to work on making inferences in a text. We will also work on CER based comprehension questions so we we can practice supporting our claims with evidence from a text. In writing we are just getting started on our opinion paper on whether we should cut down trees in the rain forest. This topic goes along great with our reading month theme of jungle.

Last week in math we started with the basics of fractions. We looked at models, made paper strips, and practiced drawing and splitting up shapes into equal parts. This week we will build on this knowledge and work on exploring unit fractions and their relation to the whole.

In social studies we will talk about the growth of the automobile industry in Michigan.

This week we will have some extra music classes built into our schedule for practice for our upcoming spring concert. A copy of songs was sent home before break. Please have your child practice at home. The concert will be on Tuesday, March 17th at Bryant.

Looking forward to a great week at Haigh!
