Forces and Magnets

We have been working hard, learning about forces- pushes and pulls. This week we are focusing on magnets.

We learned about the poles of a magnet and how we can feel the “pushes” and pulls of the poles.

After learning that magnets are attracted to iron, We explored our room to see what items were magnetic and which were not.

Then we completed a magnet craftivity sort, to tell if the objects are magnetic or not.

Word Work

Last week we introduced our 4th component of the Daily 5- word work. This is a time when students can practice making words, handwriting and letter formation, sentence building, and sight word practice. We slowly introduced the word work materials- we will add more as the year goes on.

For now, we are using: whiteboards and markers with sight word cards or sight word magnets, alphabet maze, wikki stix, and large letter tiles.

Eventually, we will add stamps, play doh, yarn, alphabet beads, and sound games/puzzles.

Cooperative Learning

Today we practiced retelling the story of The Gruffalo, by sequencing pictures from the book and making a retelling strip.

First, we practiced sequencing the pictures as an entire class. Then, we worked in pairs to sequence the story on our own.

When we finished, we practiced retelling the story with each other by using our retelling strips.

At the end, we had just enough time for one lucky pair to retell the story in front of the whole class.

It was a great interactive way for the students to remember the story. We can’t wait to do this with our next read aloud!

Fire Safety

This afternoon, both kindergarten classes and our preschool class, were visited by a few local Dearborn firefighters. They taught us the importance of fire safety and what to do in case we were ever in a fire.

After the presentation, we were able to beat the rain and visit the fire truck! We saw all of the cool tools the firefighters get to use.

Some of us even got to hold them! It was lots of fun. Thank you, Dearborn firefighters! We enjoyed your visit!
