How Tall Are You?

Our two second grade classes started a new project today!  Students in Ms. Ford’s class and in Mrs. Hachem’s class practiced using measuring tools.

In first grade, they used non-standard measuring tools.  Today, we talked about yard sticks and we measures our partner using inches.

Stay tuned next week for part 2 of our measuring fun!

STEM Week

This week, classes took part in a STEM challenge.  STEM stand for Scienc, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Students in 5th grade had to create an experiment to test which column would hold the most weight~~a cylindrical column, a rectangular column, or a triangular column.

Students tested their hypotheses in groups.

2nd and 3rd grade classes worked collaboratively to build a tin foil boat.  We tested them to see how many grams each boat would hold.  One boat held 700 grams!

Week in Review!

Last week, students practiced their NWEA skills.  Students will be complete NWEA testing on January 29th.  Students worked together on skills tests to hone in on test taking skills they will use during testing.

Our kindergarten students are still working on number sense.  Friday we broke out our newly donated rekenreks.  They thought these were the coolest math tools! Can you tell?

We are also working on greater and less than. We played Top-It with our friends.

Thank You DonorsChoose!

I have been very fortunate to have many classroom materials donated through an organization called DonorsChoose.

Donors from all over the world come together to provide public schools with materials  needed to support their curriculum.

Today, 3rd graders used some of our newly donated math games.  THANK YOU DONORS!

Savvy Second Graders

Check out these subtracting second graders! Today they were faced with the challenge of purchasing items for Oscar the cat using a $15 budget.

Students used their knowledge of needsof living things to create their lists of items.

These kiddos were very particular about what they picked for Oscar and had to explain why they chose to spend their money the way they did.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year and welcome  back! A new year means new goals and these kids were rocking it today!  This week, 4th and 5th grade students are taking part in The Paper Chain Challenge

After discussing some important vocabulary–mean, mode, and median–Students worked in random pairs to create their chains.  It was interesting to hear and see their thought process.

Tune in next week! Students will measure their chains and create a line plot using the class data.  Students will also determine the mode, median, and mean using the collected data.

Our first grade students are wacky about weather! Today we learned that one tool scientists use to measure temperature is a thermometer!  Students practiced reading their thermometers using different temperatures of water.  It was fun to see the thermometer go up so quickly in the hot water!

Slime Fun!

Last week we made SLIME!! The perfect math/science recipe because we talked about polymers, measuring, and fractions.  Want to try it at home over the Christmas Break?  Watch this video for the materials needed and the steps to follow:
